A shared teen girl bedroom receives a boho modern cottage makeover with budget-friendly furniture, smart storage solutions, and thrifted vintage decor.

The shared teen girl bedroom at the Carney house is officially finished, and the result is warm, practical, and full of personality. After creating a teenage girl bedroom design mood board, we used it as a guide to turn a simple shared space into a calming boho modern cottage bedroom that works beautifully for two teens.

As a quick reminder, this is what the bedroom looked like just a few days before the makeover began.

To give the room a fresh foundation, we leaned into a soft sage green color palette, added budget-friendly shiplap-style wall planking, layered in vintage art and thrifted accents, and chose modern furniture from Walmart. The goal was to create a teen bedroom that felt stylish, organized, and functional without losing its collected cottage charm.
Teen Girl Bedroom Before and After

The finished room became a sweet and welcoming retreat for two teen neighbors who deserved a space that reflected their individual personalities. Because the room is shared, every choice needed to serve a purpose. The furniture had to provide storage, the layout had to feel open, and the decor needed to feel youthful without being too childish.
I wanted the bedroom to feel peaceful and slightly more grown up while still feeling fresh and appropriate for teenagers. Blending modern, boho, cottage, and subtle Japandi-inspired elements helped create that balance. The result is relaxed, layered, and timeless enough to grow with them.

Teenage Wall Art
One of the best details in this shared teen girl bedroom is the gallery wall. These wall frames came already matted and included paper templates, which made it easy to tape the templates to the wall and test different arrangements before hanging anything permanently.
The equestrian and track art prints came from artist Nicola Pucci. Since the girls ride horses and run track and cross country, the artwork felt personal and meaningful without overwhelming the room. It is a great example of how teen bedroom decor can be both stylish and connected to real interests.
To add more texture and a vintage-inspired touch, I hung a wall hanging basket filled with faux flowers and added a wide brim hat on a hook. These small accents help the bedroom feel collected instead of overly matched.

Modern Cottage Textiles
Soft textiles were essential for giving the room a cozy modern cottage feeling. These coverlet quilt sets are a timeless bedding choice, and the chambray striped sheets from the Gap Home line at Walmart add a subtle pattern without making the room feel busy.
The area rug brings together the entire color palette with cream, blue, gray, and green undertones. Its floral pattern adds a feminine touch, while the soft texture makes the bedroom feel more comfortable underfoot.

Teen Bedroom Furniture
Because this is a shared bedroom, space planning was especially important. We chose low-profile beds to help the room feel more open while still leaving room underneath for under bed storage drawers. In a teen bedroom, hidden storage is always helpful for extra clothes, shoes, seasonal items, and personal belongings.
These simple black spindle beds fit the design perfectly. They have a classic shape, a modern finish, and a lightweight look that keeps the room from feeling crowded.

In one corner of the bedroom, we added a leaning desk that can work as a homework station, makeup vanity, and shelving area for school books. Multi-purpose furniture is one of the easiest ways to make a small shared teen bedroom more functional.
We had originally planned to use a different nightstand, but the measurements were not quite right. Since we were unable to use the chest from Regan’s bedroom, it ended up working beautifully in this space instead.

This sherpa chair gives the room a comfortable spot for reading, lounging, or doing homework. It also adds soft texture, which helps balance the wood furniture, black metal beds, and painted walls.

For clothing storage, we added a 5-drawer wood dresser. It feels sturdy, offers plenty of storage, and the drawers glide smoothly, which can be difficult to find in budget-friendly bedroom furniture.
I spray painted the dresser hardware with my favorite gold spray paint to bring in a little warmth and tie it in with the brass and vintage-inspired accents throughout the room.

Decorative Accents
Most of the remaining decor came from vintage finds, thrifted pieces, and the girls’ own books. This rattan lamp, paired with a thrifted shade, adds a boho layer and softens the look of the dresser area. A stone diffuser can also be used as a nightlight when needed.
The girls’ main request was to include plenty of plants, so I added a faux plant and a faux agave plant to bring in greenery without requiring daily care.
I also included one more piece of horse art to continue the subtle equestrian theme in a way that feels mature and understated.

Every teen bedroom needs a mirror, but wall space was limited. This over door brass mirror solved the problem without taking up valuable space on the walls.
With the furniture, storage, bedding, art, and accessories in place, the shared teen girl bedroom makeover is complete.

I am so happy with how this boho modern cottage bedroom turned out, but the best part is that the girls love it. Their excitement made every decision worth it.
We found many Walmart Home pieces that kept the makeover within a reasonable budget while still giving the room a collected, charming, and personalized look. It proves that a shared teen bedroom can be practical, affordable, and beautiful at the same time.
