Our Christmas Home Tour: 12 Festive Decorating Tips

Photographing our home at Christmas has become one of my favorite annual traditions. Looking back through past Christmas home tours shows how our house and family have evolved over the years—different rooms, furniture, and seasons of life—yet it always feels like us.

This year’s tour was a little different than planned. We had an unexpected water leak that required mitigation in part of the foyer, so I wasn’t able to photograph every space before the mess began. Still, I wanted to share the rooms that were finished along with a dozen simple, effortless decorating ideas you can use in your own home.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that meaningful Christmas decorating doesn’t require complexity. Small, intentional touches create warmth and make a home feel special.

Some items shown are available to purchase; I sometimes share where I found pieces in case you want to recreate a similar look.

The Dining Room

Our dining room is where much of the holiday magic happens—projects spread across the table, long family dinners, and board game nights that get delightfully competitive. I keep the table cozy and functional so it can handle everything the season brings.

Effortless Tip #1: Use rechargeable table lamps instead of candles.
Rechargeable lamps deliver the warm glow of candlelight without the mess or fire risk. They’re perfect for family meals and make hosting easier.

Effortless Tip #2: Tie ribbon around napkins as DIY napkin rings.
A simple ribbon tied around folded napkins instantly elevates the table. No storage required, minimal effort, beautiful result.

Effortless Tip #3: Use realistic faux roses with greenery.
Instead of strictly seasonal flowers, lifelike faux roses paired with greenery feel timeless and can stay out beyond Christmas—use them again for Valentine’s Day or winter decor.

Effortless Tip #4: Reuse porch planters as tree bases.
Bring in planters you already own to act as tree containers instead of buying a tree collar. They add texture and weight and feel like a collected part of your home.

The Media Room (aka Cozy Central)

The media room is where our family spends most of December—movies, games, sleepovers, and holiday crafts. I focus on making it comfortable and inviting, with small decorative choices that amplify the seasonal feeling.

Effortless Tip #5: Embrace mismatched ornaments—make them intentional.
Your tree doesn’t need designer-perfect ornaments. Fill it with sentimental, mismatched pieces and unify them with ribbon in one color. It’s cozy, personal, and cohesive.

Effortless Tip #6: Stack Christmas books or games under the tree.
Place bedtime storybooks or board games beneath the tree to encourage unplugged family moments. When these items are visible, we’re more likely to use them together.

Effortless Tip #7: Double the twinkle with mirrors.
Position battery candles in front of a mirror on the mantel to reflect and multiply the glow. It’s an easy way to make the room feel magical without more décor.

The Primary Bedroom

In the bedroom I keep Christmas understated—just enough to feel special without crowding the space. A few simple additions create a restful, seasonal retreat.

Effortless Tip #8: Lay garland across the headboard.
An extra length of garland placed along the top of the headboard adds a soft, cozy touch. No hooks or hardware needed—just a simple, elegant accent.

Effortless Tip #9: Use lighted branches for instant ambiance.
Lighted branches in a vase give a glowing, tree-like effect without bringing another tree into the room. Paired with garland, they provide all the bedroom décor you need.

The Living Room

The living room is where Christmas feels most lived-in. That’s exactly how I like it—decor that invites use, comfort, and connection.

Effortless Tip #10: Display a game board on your coffee table.
A decorative backgammon or chess board makes a great focal point and doubles as entertainment. When games are out in the open, we’re more likely to play together.

A Note About the Foyer

I planned to include more of the foyer in this year’s tour, but the water leak changed those plans. The space was in the middle of cleanup and repairs, so photographing it wasn’t possible. It was a good reminder that homes are for living—not for being perfectly staged for photos.
