Today I’m excited to share a small patio makeover that proves you don’t need a large yard to create a warm, functional outdoor living space. After a lot of planning and a little elbow grease, we transformed a modest 10×10 concrete slab into a cozy spot for family evenings, cookouts, and small gatherings.
This patio was small and a little plain to start, which is a common situation in many newer suburban neighborhoods. My goal was to squeeze as much function as possible into the space while keeping it comfortable and inviting for guests. With summer gatherings on the calendar, I needed a layout that worked for conversation, grilling, and late-night s’mores.
I began by creating a mood board focused on pieces from the Havana Club and Seaside Modern collections. The palette centers on warm wood tones, galvanized metal, muted patterns, and vintage-style lighting — all contributing to a relaxed rustic feel.

When we assembled everything, the weather decided to be unpredictable — a mix of rain, humidity, and wind made photography challenging — but the final result was worth it. To ground the area visually and add color, I started with an outdoor rug that helps define the seating zone.
To make the most of limited square footage without making it feel crowded, we placed four chairs — one at each corner of the slab. This arrangement maximizes seating while maintaining open sightlines and easy movement. I mixed wooden chairs with a few metal accents to create a comfortable, rustic look.
We kept a small thrifted bistro table for our daughter so she still has her own little spot between the chairs. That’s an easy way to make the space family-friendly without losing adult seating.
A terracotta fire pit sits in the center as both a practical focal point and a gathering spot. It’s perfect for s’mores and late-night warmth, and sometimes we add a removable tabletop to use it as a coffee table when the fire isn’t lit. The fire pit’s shape and texture add character to the compact layout.
Layered throws and patterned outdoor pillows add color and comfort without overwhelming the space. These textiles make the chairs more inviting and create a pulled-together look that reads cozy and intentional.
Because we didn’t have an overhead structure, hanging string lights required a DIY approach. We used planters with poles set in concrete as freestanding light posts to drape Edison-style bulbs across the yard. The warm glow they create at dusk adds instant ambience and makes the patio feel like an outdoor room.
To help keep insects at bay, we planted lemongrass and citronella in the planters. They look pretty and add a fresh scent to the space.
A blank wall with vinyl siding became a functional backdrop when I hung metal troughs as a small herb garden. Placed just outside the kitchen door, the herbs are handy for quick snips while cooking and add vertical interest to the patio wall.
For entertaining, a simple snack station keeps things relaxed — pitchers of lemonade, a stack of graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows for roasting. Small touches like a favorite pitcher and a tea towel keep the vibe casual and welcoming.
Now the patio is a place for easy evenings — listening to music, watching our daughter play in the yard, or hosting a casual cookout. It’s proof that a thoughtful layout, layered textures, and a few multifunctional pieces can turn a small concrete slab into a cozy outdoor retreat.
