Boho Bedroom Decor Ideas for Girls

A little girl’s bedroom gets a big-girl update with boho furniture swaps, DIY geology art, and a few glam touches.

Time really does fly. It feels like yesterday Olivia was four and we were just settling into this house. In no time she was five—mad for butterflies, ballet, and excited about a baby sister on the way—so we gave her a playful butterfly-themed room. Fast forward again and she’s eight: collecting rocks and seashells, dressing up, tumbling, and learning violin. Her tastes had shifted, and her room needed to grow with her.

What started as a simple request for a ceiling fan quickly turned into a full refresh. Olivia asked for a non-canopy bed, and before we knew it we were selecting new bedding, lamps, nightstands, and a few special accent pieces that reflect her evolving personality.

We sourced several pieces from the Better Homes & Gardens line at Walmart, choosing items that felt both youthful and mature: soft textures, subtle boho shapes, and a few polished brass accents for a touch of glamour.

One of the first big wins was a rattan headboard we found during a winter trip to the North Carolina mountains. The organic texture set the tone for a boho-meets-glam look that suits her perfectly.

I embraced feminine, frilly bedding to keep the room feeling youthful. We used a reversible pink-striped duvet cover, chunky white pillows, and a fringed throw pillow for texture and softness. Together these elements create a cozy, layered bed that still reads grown-up enough for an eight-year-old.

Her old thrifted nightstands were charming but not practical, so we swapped in rustic white nightstands and added gold drawer pulls for a refined finish. Marble-and-brass lamps sit on either side of the bed and provide the perfect warm reading light. I keep a handful of Olivia’s favorite books and a playful geometric figurine on the nightstand to make the space feel curated but lived-in.

We also repurposed part of the room for functionality: a homework station that doubles as a dress-up and makeup vanity replaced the temporary ballet barre we’d installed during quarantine. A simple knob swap refreshed an existing dresser, and a round gold mirror now anchors the vignette above it.

Because Olivia loves collecting treasures from the beach and woods, we displayed last summer’s seashell finds in a hurricane lantern. I also created a shadow box geology chart by hot-gluing labeled rocks from her collection—an easy DIY that celebrates her new hobby and the family memory of gem mining at Chimney Rock, NC.

We found larger amethyst pieces while gem mining and used them as accent decor and bookends around the room. These natural elements reinforce the geology theme and add a lovely, personal touch that she can admire every day.

The room now reflects Olivia’s interests and feels like a genuine “big girl” space—without any painting or major construction. Her reaction was priceless; when she first saw the new room she asked, “Can I sleep in here?!” We love how surprised and delighted she was.

Later this year we’ll likely refresh Regan’s nursery into a toddler room as well. It feels like these little ones grow overnight—so many small changes, each one meaningful.
