Blue Teen Bedroom Ideas and Girl’s Room Tour

A girl’s bedroom transforms into a Swedish cottage–inspired teen space with thrifted vintage finds, Scandinavian wallpaper, and lively bedding pattern play.

Olivia’s blue Swedish cottage–style bedroom is complete, and it’s so charming I almost want to move in myself.

The difference from the day we first moved in is striking. When Olivia was in kindergarten, her space was a butterfly-themed pink room, but now, approaching fifth grade, she wanted something more mature—yet vintage and cozy. A cottage-inspired design felt like the perfect fit.

Olivia picked the paint, wallpaper, art, and curtains, then asked me to finish the room as a surprise. I loved the creative freedom and ran with her selections.

Designing rooms for girls is a joy for me—it brings back memories of constantly redecorating my own bedroom and sketching interior ideas as a teenager.

We framed a pencil sketch of Olivia made by a cousin when she was three and placed it near the door to give it a little spotlight.

Wallpaper

The Sandberg Ragnvi wallpaper from Scandinavian Wallpaper brings dramatic impact—almost like a painted mural. The print is a 1920s Swedish revival, which felt meaningful since we have family roots in Sweden.

To mix patterns, I added a faux block-print design to the ceiling using inexpensive bird decals as a subtle nod to Olivia’s nursery. Below the chair rail we installed beadboard and painted the doors and trim in Sherwin-Williams Smoky Blue—a soft, pretty shade that ties everything together.

Rug

To balance the florals, I introduced a bold geometric plaid rug. Its multicolored palette—navy, olive, rust, blush, and purple—brought modern energy while complementing the vintage wallpaper. The rug is plush, durable, and ideal for a bedroom where comfort matters.

Bedding

Because this room is for a ten-year-old, I wanted the bed to feel playful rather than overly grown-up. I layered a stitched geometric quilt that reads like a vintage coverlet over a subtle floral duvet and a cozy down insert. Taupe gingham and mauve pillows add warm accents against the blue, and yellow embroidered sheets give the bedding a cheerful, feminine touch.

Windows

To warm up the blues, I hung mauve velvet curtains and added blackout Roman shades in a soft flaxen tone. Olivia insisted she didn’t want “pink” in the room, but curiously enough, she accepts mauve—so that worked out perfectly.

Bed

To stretch the budget, we kept Olivia’s existing platform bed and swapped the old headboard for a scalloped headboard that gives an updated, cottage feel without the high price tag of designer versions.

Nightstands

I hunted for secondhand nightstands but couldn’t find a matching pair. These classic stained nightstands offered ample storage and a handy cord-management space in the back. Modern brass-and-rattan lamps add a Scandinavian touch and warm glow for bedtime reading.

I also found an affordable vintage-style Bluetooth radio that Olivia loves for impromptu dance parties with her sister.

Homework Station / Vanity

I rescued a small Craigslist desk for $50, repaired it, and painted it Sherwin-Williams Anew Gray to provide a calm, neutral workspace amid all the color. A thrifted $15 chair with a charming carved tulip detail was refinished and reupholstered using an inexpensive kitchen towel to create a one-of-a-kind seat.

A black-and-brass desk lamp keeps the space functional for study sessions, and the setup doubles as a vanity whenever she wants to get ready or play with makeup.

Doors

The closet doors had dated lacquered brass knobs, so we replaced them with antique-style knobs. For the hinges, we used a quick Rub ’n Buff finish to update the hardware color—an easy, cost-effective refresh.

Fandelier

Olivia insists on sleeping with a fan on, so I found a woven fandelier that functions like a ceiling fan while adding texture and whimsy to the room. It performs well and fits the cottage aesthetic perfectly.

Dresser

I found a stunning burl wood dresser for $300—a real score. I revived its finish with a gentle Restor-A-Finish treatment to remove scratches and refresh the wood. It now looks practically new and anchors the room with rich texture.

Art

We kept wall decor minimal so the wallpaper could take center stage. Olivia chose two antique-style altered portraits—one of a girl blowing a bubble and another making a silly face—that add a playful, cheeky personality to the room.

The pieces reflect Olivia’s fun spirit and bring a touch of humor to the vintage-inspired space.

I refreshed a secondhand mirror with Rub ’n Buff and repainted a thrifted lamp to look like an Anthropologie find. A few budget faux hydrangeas bring the dresser vignette to life without breaking the bank.
