Transform Old Picture Frames into Antique Mirrors

How to make DIY antique mirrors using old secondhand picture frames quickly, easily, and without the mess.

If you love thrifting, picture frame projects are almost irresistible — they’re inexpensive, versatile, and perfect for quick makeovers. Recently my husband and I spent a date day at an antique mall and discovered a set of four secondhand frames that begged for a refresh. I decided to turn them into antique-style mirrors for the guest bedroom, using a fast, low-mess technique that yields a classic, aged look.

This project is ideal when you want an instant vintage touch without the lengthy, messy chemical processes. I’ve done messy antiquing methods before, but this time I used an antique mirror film sample that made the whole job quick and tidy. From prep to hanging, the whole thing took roughly 30 minutes.

Supplies Used:

  • Secondhand picture frames (any size that fits your space)
  • Paint of your choice (I used Fusion Mineral Paint)
  • Medium-sized craft brush
  • Antique mirror film samples (I used 5″ x 7″ samples)
  • Spray bottle filled with water
  • A credit card or small squeegee for smoothing

The Steps

1. Start by choosing the finish you’d like for the frames. These frames were originally white and I wanted a darker, more aged base, so I painted them with a coal-black base coat. Let that dry completely before the next step.

2. To add dimension and a subtle metallic patina, dry brush a light layer of metallic vintage gold and a soft sage over the black base. Dry brushing brings out the frame details and creates that worn, antique appearance without heavy distressing.

3. For the mirror surface, I used small antique mirror film samples (5″ x 7″), which were very affordable — about $0.45 each in my case. To apply, spray both the glass and the adhesive side of the film lightly with water. Carefully place the film onto the glass, then smooth from the center outward using a credit card or small squeegee to remove any bubbles and ensure full contact.

4. Once the film and the frame paint are thoroughly dry, reassemble the frame by placing the newly antiqued glass back into the frame. Secure the backing and hang the pieces where they best complement the space. I positioned my set between two closets in the guest bedroom for a small but impactful decorative touch.

The total cost for this mini makeover was very low — because I used paint I already had and inexpensive mirror film samples, the project cost under $2. It’s a fast, budget-friendly way to add character and a touch of vintage glam to a room.

These DIY antique mirrors are perfect for small spaces, gallery walls, or to flank furniture for symmetry and shine. The technique is forgiving, so it’s an easy weekend project even for beginners.
