Small Laundry Room Organization: 12 Space-Saving Ideas

5 Tips for Maximizing Function and Storage in a Small Laundry Room

Hello! I’m Ashley from Cherished Bliss, and I’m delighted to share a few practical ideas for making the most of a small laundry room. Between raising three kids, homeschooling, and renovating an 1865 home since our move back to Wisconsin, I’ve learned how to squeeze a lot of function out of modest spaces.

Not everyone has a large laundry area—many homes have compact rooms or laundry closets that need smarter organization rather than a full remodel. These tips will help you add storage, streamline laundry routines, and make the space both efficient and pleasant to use, whether your laundry room is tiny or simply underused.

Add Storage

Storage is the foundation of a functional laundry room. If you currently have just a small cabinet or a single shelf, consider expanding vertically to use wall space efficiently. Tall cabinets free up valuable floor space and keep bulky items — like seasonal towels, extra bedding, or cleaning supplies — tucked away yet accessible.

When choosing cabinetry, think about adjustable shelving so you can customize storage for detergent bottles, large containers, or baskets. Closed storage hides clutter and creates a calmer visual backdrop, while a few open cubbies can keep everyday items within easy reach.

Add a Shelf

An open shelf above the washer and dryer is one of the simplest upgrades with big impact. It gives you a spot to set frequently used products, pretty containers, and a couple of baskets for small items like stain pens and dryer sheets. Glass jars or attractive dispensers make everyday supplies look intentional instead of messy.

If you prefer a lighter look, a single floating shelf can make the room feel less crowded while still giving you surface area for soap, pods, and decorative touches. Use baskets on the shelf to corral small items and reduce visual clutter.

Sort Your Dirty Laundry

Sorting laundry ahead of time saves time and reduces mess. Set up clearly labeled bins or hampers for lights, darks, delicates, and towels so family members can drop clothes into the right place. When laundry day arrives, you can load the washer directly without sorting on the floor or spilling piles around the room.

Compact, stackable laundry sorters or narrow rolling hampers are ideal for small rooms. If floor space is extremely limited, consider wall-mounted hampers or a slim sorter that fits in a closet or nook.

Create a Place to Hang Clothes

Include a hanging solution for items that need to air dry or be removed from the dryer immediately to prevent wrinkles. A simple rod between cabinets, a retractable clothesline, or a fold-down drying rack provides flexibility without consuming floor area.

Even a short hanging bar above the counter or washer gives you a convenient spot for shirts, delicates, or items that need to be steamed. This small addition helps keep clothes wrinkle-free and prevents the habit of tossing damp items onto the floor.

Find Your Laundry Room Hotspot

Every laundry area tends to develop a “hotspot,” a surface where things collect—often a countertop next to the dryer or the top of a washer. Identify where clutter accumulates and assign that spot a specific job: a basket for delicates, a tray for loose change and keys, or a bin for items that need mending.

Giving the hotspot a purpose prevents random piles and keeps the rest of the room tidy. Be prepared, though: hotspots can migrate. If that happens, repeat the process in the new location until routines settle.

Extra tips: label shelves and baskets so everyone in the household knows where items belong, use clear containers for quick visual checks of supplies, and keep a small waste bin handy for lint, tags, and packaging.

I hope these practical ideas inspire you to organize your laundry room in a way that saves time, reduces stress, and adds useful storage. A few thoughtful changes can transform a cramped, cluttered room into a calm, efficient space.
