Classic Christmas Foyer with Fresh Greenery
No matter how much Hollywood reinvents the holidays, the classic Christmas films remain timeless. The nostalgia of films like It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, and White Christmas evokes a warmth and simplicity that modern productions rarely match.
There’s a similar, comforting feeling in our foyer this season. Classic furnishings, black-and-white family photos, and fresh pine and holly clippings come together to create an entry that feels both familiar and full of memories.

Black-and-white family photographs on the wall bring a timeless depth to the space. Without color, the faces and expressions feel almost more present and immediate, inviting visitors to pause and remember. An antique Victorian chest—an unexpected Craigslist find—anchors the vignette and piques curiosity about the lives it has already witnessed.
The scent of fresh cedar and pine completes the scene. That fragrance transports me back to childhood mornings, the thrill of descending the stairs in pajamas, and the simple wonder of holiday mornings. The smells and textures of natural greenery are an enduring shortcut to memory and comfort.

These days the holiday magic looks different for me. It’s no longer only about unwrapping packages or indulging in cookies; the most meaningful moments are quieter. Presence, connection, and time shared with loved ones have become the most precious gifts.

This year I don’t long for wrapped things under the tree. Instead I want small, undistracted moments: snuggling with our child while they still linger in my lap, long conversations with my partner, and a day with a single plan—to enjoy family, to let time slow and be present together.

To honor family and tradition in the foyer, I brought out my grandmother’s tarnished candelabra. Lighting the Advent candles is a quiet ritual that connects me to her laugh and to family traditions. I arranged the candles with fresh tree clippings in a St. Lucia–inspired style to keep a bit of my Swedish heritage close during the season.

Minimalism has felt especially right this year. A restrained approach to holiday décor—focusing on thoughtful pieces, seasonal greenery, and sentiment—keeps the foyer welcoming without feeling cluttered. Simplicity is not absence; it’s careful selection of the elements that mean the most.
