How to build an organized paint storage system in a utility closet with DIY shelving, pegboard, and simple organizers
We turned a cluttered garage closet into a tidy Paint Central using inexpensive materials and a little planning. After unexpected water damage and a chaotic renovation, our paint and supplies had taken over the space. Converting a small closet into a dedicated paint storage area gave us an efficient, accessible spot for everything from rollers to touch-up jars.

We focused on maximizing every inch with DIY shelving along the doorframe, a pegboard organizing wall, and baskets and hooks for small tools. The result is a compact, flexible paint supply closet that keeps paints, primers, brushes, and prep supplies easy to find and use.

Organized paint storage closet — overview
Supplies used
- Leftover white paint (for refinishing the closet interior)
- Wood scraps (1x2s and plywood for DIY shelves)
- Pegboard panel and a pegboard organizer kit
- Pegboard baskets and assorted hooks

Organize paint supplies by category
To keep the closet practical and efficient, we set up stations for each stage of painting:
- Prep (spackle, sandpaper, caulk)
- Paint (cans, primers, small touch-up jars)
- Finishing (polyurethane, sealers)
- Hand tools (brushes, rollers, putty knives, caulk guns)
Shelves are used for frequently reached items like drop cloths, rags, primer, liquid sandpaper, and partially used paint cans. We left shelving unlabeled for flexibility, so items can move around as projects change.

Tips for storing old paint
Only keep what you’ll use. Keep basic neutrals and common sheens you reach for often—white, black, and grays in satin, eggshell, and semi-gloss. When partially used cans accumulate, decide which colors you’ll realistically reuse and let go of the rest. Donate extra paint to local organizations if possible.
Save small amounts for touch-ups. Before discarding or donating large cans, pour a small amount into airtight touch-up containers. Label each jar with the room or color so you have a ready supply for minor repairs without storing many full cans. A small mixing ball in the jar keeps the paint ready to use.

DIY paint storage shelves
We built narrow shelves from leftover 1x2s and plywood to use tight niches beside the doorframe. Those slim sections are ideal for spray cans, primer, caulk tubes, and adhesives—items that were previously wasted space. Dedicate each shelf to a category (spray paint, spray primer, caulk tubes, adhesives) so things are easy to find.

Pegboard and small-item storage
Installing a pegboard organizer transformed the wall into a highly efficient storage surface. Hooks and pegboard baskets corral brushes, rollers, trays, painter’s tape, caulk guns, sprayers, and sanding pads. Small items go in baskets; hooks hold everything else. Storing brushes bristles-down to dry on hooks avoids water collecting in handles and keeps them ready for the next job.

Buckets and a step stool live on the closet floor for easy access during projects, while frequently used consumables remain at eye level.

Storage solutions summary
This organized paint storage closet relies on a few simple principles: maximize vertical space, create distinct zones for different supplies, and keep small items contained with baskets and hooks. The setup is budget-friendly, adaptable, and built mostly from materials we already had. It reduces search time, keeps supplies protected, and makes painting projects smoother.

We still have work to do organizing the rest of the garage, but this closet is a tangible win. Moving the water heater into the space later required a bit of rethinking, and a compact spray paint or tube rack works well for storing caulk and small tubes while keeping them accessible.

Progress over perfection is our mantra—small, practical storage solutions add up. If you’re tackling a paint closet, focus on zones, vertical storage, and keeping only what you will realistically use. The payoff is a usable, calmer garage and a paint closet that actually supports your projects.
