3 Clever Ways to Upgrade Plain Windows

My Carolina Panthers may have lost the Super Bowl yesterday, but our master bedroom is definitely winning—or at least getting there.

UPDATE: See our full master bedroom makeover reveal here.

If windows are the eyes of a room, our master bedroom just got a full makeup makeover. What used to be plain and unremarkable now has the window version of eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara—subtle, layered, and flattering.

Before the refresh, the windows were simple and functional. We used our usual DIY Craftsman window trim technique to give them some architectural interest that complements the planked board-and-batten focal wall we installed earlier.

We finished the trim, then added long white curtains from Ikea and swapped out the basic white blinds for driftwood Roman shades to introduce texture and warmth. That combination instantly softened the space and let the natural light read beautifully in the mornings.

Those three window elements—trim, shades, and curtains—made an outsized difference. Together they create depth, texture, and a finished look that elevates the whole room.

We also added a little personality with a faux deer head—Pat the deer—because a playful accent lightens the room and gives it character.

A few additional tweaks tightened the room’s look: I replaced the bedside table lamps with task lamps for a more industrial feel, changed the mirror, and added small decorative touches that tie into the board-and-batten wall. We also swapped in a ceiling fan we love, though that model has been discontinued. I put together a collection of similar stylish fans for anyone looking for alternatives here.

I’m still deciding on a few finishing touches—most notably an area rug and whether to alter the headboard. I’ve considered switching the upholstered panel to a linen tone or applying a subtle gray wash to the dark wood to soften it. Small changes like those can shift the room’s mood from warm to more neutral and modern, so I’m taking my time to choose the right option.

Progress and Project List

We’re close to finishing this room. Here’s our current status and remaining tasks:

  • DONE: Paint walls (Benjamin Moore Moonshine)
  • DONE: Install planked board-and-batten focal wall
  • DONE: Change hardware on dresser
  • DONE: Install window trim
  • DONE: Replace lamps
  • DONE: Hang decor over bed
  • DONE: Replace blinds with bamboo/driftwood shades
  • DONE: Hang curtains
  • DONE: Change out mirror
  • Refinish barn doors
  • Hang barn doors
  • Buy area rug
  • Possibly apply a gray wash to the bed frame

I’ve been experimenting with different textures, metals, and finishes to keep the room feeling cohesive while adding subtle contrasts. Light-colored curtains paired with textured Roman shades add both softness and structure: the curtains frame the window, while the shades provide warmth and privacy. The Craftsman-style trim ties everything together and gives the windows true architectural presence.

If you’re planning a similar update, focus first on window trim, then layer in shades and curtains to create depth. Small changes—new lamps, a different mirror, or a playful accent like Pat the deer—can make the room feel completed without requiring a full redesign.
