DIY Air Dry Clay Chain for Jewelry and Home Decor

How to Make a Designer-Look Decorative Chain for Much Less Using Air-Dry Clay

Decorative objects—those quirky accents people arrange on coffee tables and dressers—can be oddly compelling. They’re often unexpected and a little random, yet somehow they complete a space. One trend I’ve noticed and fallen for is the chunky decorative chain used as a tabletop accessory. Designer versions are beautiful but usually expensive. Rather than pay $50–$200 for a single piece, I experimented with air-dry clay and made a convincing dupe for a fraction of the cost.

Yes, a giant chain on a coffee table might seem like an odd choice, but it reads sculptural and modern. If you like the look but don’t want to spend a small fortune, this easy DIY creates a stone-like or granite-look decorative chain that’s perfect for coffee tables, consoles, or shelves. It’s a budget-friendly project that’s forgiving for beginners.

DIY Decorative Chain from Air-Dry Clay

Supplies

  • Air-dry clay (neutral color)
  • Blunt knife or butter knife
  • A small cup of water
  • Black satin spray paint or black acrylic paint
  • White acrylic paint for splattering
  • Medium craft brush for paint splatter
  • Optional: disposable gloves and a baking sheet

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Divide the air-dry clay into three equal portions — each roughly the size of a baseball.

2. Roll one portion between your palms or on a clean surface until it forms a smooth “snake” about 8–10 inches long.

3. Trim the ends with a blunt knife so the ends meet cleanly.

4. Moisten the cut ends slightly with water, press them together, and smooth the seam with your fingers to form a loop. Shape that loop into an oval and set it aside to dry flat.

5. Repeat that process to make two more identical oval links from the other two portions. Let those three links dry for at least 24 hours so they remain flat and don’t warp.

6. Once the first three links are dry, roll two more small “snakes” from additional clay portions as before.

7. Thread each fresh snake through one of the dried links before joining its ends, so the new link sits interlocked with the dried one. Smooth seams and shape each link into a consistent oval.

8. Continue adding links until you have a chain of about five links or the length you prefer. Let the completed chain dry thoroughly for another day or two.

Tip: To speed drying, you can place the chain in a cold oven on a baking sheet, set the oven to 200°F (93°C), and warm for about 15 minutes. Do not bake longer or on higher heat, as the clay can scorch.

9. Once the chain is completely dry and hard, spray the entire piece with black satin paint or paint it with black acrylic on both sides. Allow the paint to dry fully before the next step.

10. To create a stone or granite finish, dip a medium brush into white acrylic paint and tap off the excess. Hold the brush a few inches above the chain and flick or tap the bristles so small white speckles land on the black surface, mimicking natural stone flecks. Wear gloves or cover your workspace, because splatter can get messy.

11. If any splatters are too large, touch them up with more black paint using a small brush. Once you’re satisfied with the look, let everything dry completely.

The finished piece looks surprisingly like carved stone. It won’t be flawless, but the small imperfections add to the handcrafted charm. For a little under $10 in materials, this project is an affordable way to get a high-end look without the designer price tag.

I still had plenty of clay left over, so I’m already thinking about other small sculptural pieces to try. Air-dry clay is a great medium to experiment with if you enjoy quick, budget-friendly home decor DIYs.
