Realistic Marble Effect Herringbone Tile and Faux Marble Shower Renovation for a Modern, Timeless Bathroom
Thank you Alexander James for sponsoring this post.
Our primary bathroom is finally beginning to look and feel like a real bathroom again, and the biggest reason is the new faux marble herringbone tile floor. It has completely changed the mood of the space and brought in the classic, timeless look I have wanted from the very beginning.
This renovation started earlier than planned after an unexpected HVAC leak forced us into water mitigation and demolition. While it was not the way we hoped to begin a bathroom remodel, the process has given us the chance to create a space that feels brighter, cleaner, and much more intentional.
Bathroom Before

A couple of years ago, we gave this bathroom a simple refresh with paint, vinyl flooring, and updated decor. It was meant to be a temporary solution until we were ready for a full renovation someday. At the time, we did not know that “someday” would arrive much sooner than expected.
The refresh helped make the bathroom more livable, but there were still several features we hoped to replace eventually, especially the dated beige shower surround. From the first day we moved into this house, I knew that shower would one day need to go.
The Bathroom Refresh – Last Year

Behind the curtain, this was the shower we had been living with for years. It served its purpose, but it made the room feel dark, dated, and smaller than it actually was. Once demolition started, it became clear that this renovation was the right opportunity to rethink the entire bathroom from the floor up.

Now, the bathroom already feels completely different.
Marble Effect Porcelain Tile – Now

For the shower walls, we chose a marble effect porcelain tile in a 4×16 size from Alexander James. I love the look of real marble, but I did not want the added maintenance or worry about etching over time. Porcelain gives us the elegant marble-inspired appearance we wanted while offering a more practical option for everyday bathroom use.
The RTWM Statuary line includes multiple tile shapes and sizes in the same finish, which makes it easier to coordinate the shower walls, shower floor, niches, and bathroom floor without everything feeling mismatched. The veining has a soft, realistic variation that looks far more natural than many faux marble tiles I have seen.
The result is a classic bathroom tile design that feels fresh and bright without looking too trendy. It gives the room that modern meets timeless style we hoped to achieve.
Faux Marble Herringbone Tile Floor

The faux marble herringbone tile floor may be my favorite part of the renovation so far. The herringbone pattern adds movement and character, while the marble effect keeps the overall look refined. Since this bathroom is not large, choosing a polished finish was important because it helps reflect natural light from the window and makes the room feel more open.
I wanted a cool-toned tile that leaned more gray than beige, and this one checked every box on my wish list. It works beautifully with the shower tile and gives the bathroom a cohesive, high-end look without using real marble.

For the grout, we chose a medium gray shade, MAPEI Timberwolf. I thought carefully about long-term maintenance, especially because bathroom floors need to be practical as well as pretty. The gray grout helps define the herringbone pattern while also being more forgiving than bright white grout.

Hexagon Tile Shower Floor
Inside the shower, we continued with the same RTWM Statuary porcelain marble effect finish, using larger 12×24 tiles on the walls. The larger format and polished sheen help reduce visual clutter, which makes the shower feel less cramped than it did before.
For the shower floor and niches, we chose the RTWM Statuary hexagon tile. The hexagon shape adds texture and interest while still coordinating with the rest of the marble effect porcelain tile. It also creates a sense of continuity with other bathrooms in our home, where we have used hex tile as a recurring design detail.

The combination of herringbone floor tile, large shower wall tile, and hexagon shower floor tile gives the bathroom layers of pattern without making it feel busy. Everything stays within the same marble effect finish, so the room feels calm, polished, and cohesive.

Next, we will be bringing in the vanity, preparing for countertops, and hoping the remaining pieces come together smoothly. Our goal is to have the bathroom finished by October, though renovation timelines can always be unpredictable.
Upcoming Bathroom Plans

After being pushed into this renovation unexpectedly, we are now genuinely excited to see the bathroom taking shape. What first felt overwhelming has turned into a chance to create a primary bathroom that better fits our home and our style.
The overall vision is a timeless bathroom design with classic materials, soft contrast, and a bright, welcoming feel. The marble effect porcelain tile is setting the tone beautifully, and each new detail makes the space feel closer to finished.

Soon we will be choosing paint colors, installing the final elements, and adding the finishing touches. I had originally pictured bright white walls, but now I am also considering whether a soft light gray trim could be a pretty option. There are still decisions to make, but the direction feels clear.
One more look at the herringbone tile floor, because it truly is one of the most beautiful parts of this small bathroom renovation.

What wall color would you choose with faux marble tile: crisp white, soft gray, or something with a little more warmth? The tile has already transformed the room, and the final paint choice will help bring the entire modern, timeless bathroom design together.
