How I Hung Heavy Wall Art Without Finding a Stud
After several recent updates to our living room, I assumed the final touch—hanging a large print—would be quick and simple. We’d already lime-washed the fireplace and built a window seat, so this last step should’ve been easy. Instead, that one blank wall turned out to be surprisingly complicated.
The reason? There’s a slab of brick hidden beneath the drywall. When we first discovered the living room was an 80s addition, we suspected that wall used to be the exterior brick of our 1960s colonial. Our flooring contractor later confirmed it, which meant hanging anything heavy there would be more challenging than on typical drywall with studs.

I’d found a beautiful antique-style print of Biltmore Estate and wanted it centered on that wall. It felt personal—Biltmore is where my husband and I honeymooned and both of us have childhood memories there—but I didn’t want to start drilling blindly into unknown framing and risk unnecessary damage.
Older houses often make the simplest projects feel complicated. Between unpredictable framing and hidden materials like brick, what should be a quick job can become time-consuming and risky. That’s when I heard about a heavy-duty hanging system from a company called High & Mighty. They make wall hangers designed to secure heavy decor without needing to find a stud—an ideal solution for tricky walls or plaster and drywall backed by masonry.

Using the system was straightforward. I measured and marked the center height where I wanted the print, placed the metal mounting bar, used the built-in level to make sure everything was straight, and pressed the hooks into the drywall on each end of the bar. The level removed easily, and the picture wire hooked perfectly onto the bar. The whole process took only a few minutes and left minimal damage compared to drilling multiple holes while searching for studs.

Now the print hangs securely and looks right at home. Framing large pieces makes a room feel finished, and this wall finally felt like the cherry on top of our living room. We still have many blank walls in the rest of the house, so a reliable no-stud hanging solution will be useful again and again.

If you’re facing a tricky wall—brick behind drywall, plaster, or uncertain framing—and you’d rather skip the toolbox and power drill, consider a heavy-duty hanger that anchors into drywall and distributes weight across a metal mounting bar. These systems are especially helpful when:
- You can’t locate a stud in the desired spot
- You’re hanging a heavy or oversized artwork or mirror
- You want minimal drywall damage and an easy leveling solution
A few simple tips when hanging heavy wall decor without studs:
- Check the weight rating of the hanger and the picture wire or brackets on your frame.
- Use a level while you position the mounting bar to ensure the artwork hangs straight the first time.
- Measure twice and mark once—confirm the height and center point before installing.
- For very heavy pieces, consider two mounting points to distribute weight evenly.

This Biltmore print gives me a mini vacation every time I look at it, and it sits nicely with the framed childhood home pieces in our foyer. Lately we’ve been drawn to house-themed art—it’s a small, sentimental trend in our home that brings back good memories.

Do you have a favorite place or memory framed on your walls? Or have you discovered unexpected brick or other surprises behind drywall in an older home? I’d love to hear how you solved tricky hanging situations—sometimes the simplest tools and a little patience are all it takes to make a room feel complete.
