Modern French Country Bedroom Makeover: Before & After

There’s something extra special about decorating a room when you know the people who live there won’t see the finished space for a very long time.

Earlier this year, some dear friends of ours packed up their family and moved out of the country to serve as missionaries for the next couple of years. While they’re away, we’ve been helping take care of their house back home.

And somewhere along the way, we had an idea.

What if, while they were gone, we transformed their primary bedroom into a cozy little retreat waiting for them when they come home?

So that’s exactly what we did.

The room already had great bones… beautiful wood floors, lots of natural light from a large sliding glass door, and a pretty good blank slate. But otherwise, it was fairly builder grade.

Our goal was to give it character and warmth while creating a modern French country bedroom that felt peaceful, timeless, and collected rather than overly decorated.

And now that it’s finished, I think this might be one of my favorite bedrooms we’ve ever created.

The Bedroom Before

Before we touched anything, the room was simple and functional.

It had 8-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, a large west-facing sliding glass door, and a barn door that we have plans to replace with something a little more fitting eventually.

Nothing was particularly wrong with the room. It just didn’t have much personality yet.

Which is actually my favorite kind of space to work with because you don’t necessarily need to rip everything out to make a dramatic difference.

Adding Character With Picture Frame Molding

Our first order of business was giving those plain walls a little architectural interest.

We installed picture frame molding around the room, carefully spacing the boxes so they felt balanced on each wall.

This one project completely changed the personality of the space.

Picture frame molding is one of my favorite tricks for making a basic room feel more custom, and it works especially well in French country interiors where architectural details do so much of the decorating for you.

Once the molding went up, the room already felt a hundred times more charming, and we hadn’t even painted yet.

Choosing the Perfect Creamy White Paint

Next came paint.

Instead of choosing a white paint based on a tiny swatch under fluorescent store lighting (we’ve all learned that lesson the hard way), I used the room’s natural light to help narrow down our options.

The sliding glass doors make this primarily a west-facing room, which means the light changes dramatically throughout the day and becomes warmer in the afternoon.

After testing several options, we landed on Behr Mourning Dove.

And OH. MY. WORD. It is so good in here.

It’s a soft, creamy white that gives the room warmth without turning everything yellow. Against the wood floors, vintage furniture, black bed, and blue toile, it created exactly the backdrop I wanted.

A Fireplace for Instant Cozy Factor

Then came one of the biggest transformations in the room: the fireplace.

The bedroom could get a little drafty, so adding an electric fireplace gave us both a practical heat source and a beautiful focal point.

We chose a French-inspired fireplace design with a copper style insert that instantly made the room feel as though it had been part of the house all along. (It was less than $600!)

That is one of my favorite ways to approach a builder-grade room.

Instead of filling it with more stuff, add one or two architectural elements that make the room itself interesting.

Between the picture frame molding and fireplace, we suddenly didn’t need nearly as much decor.

The $400 Canopy Bed I Almost Didn’t Find

I had one very specific vision for this bedroom:

A black canopy bed.

So naturally, I did what any bargain-loving decorator would do and stalked Facebook Marketplace for weeks.

I kept waiting for the perfect secondhand bed to appear at the perfect price… until I stumbled across a spindle poster bed on Amazon for less than $400.

Brand new. For less than some of the secondhand beds I’d been considering.

Well, twist my arm.

The tall black frame gave us the contrast the room needed and helped balance all of the softer French country elements without making the room feel too formal.

Using Toile Curtains on the Canopy Bed

Then I remembered something I already had tucked away from an old project: blue toile curtains. (Remember the blue toile fabric I put on the glass cabinets in our laundry room?)

FREE DECOR! (Well, not free exactly, but it was already paid for.)

My favorite kind.

The toile brought in that quintessential French country pattern without requiring us to cover the entire room in florals.

Because the ceilings are only 8 feet tall, though, I didn’t want to completely enclose the canopy with fabric. Curtains hanging from all four sides would have made the room feel smaller and visually heavy.

Instead, I draped the toile behind the headboard.

It gives you the romantic look of a fabric-draped canopy while still keeping the room feeling open.

Mixing New Furniture With Vintage Finds

This is where the room really started feeling collected instead of decorated.

I found a pair of solid wood vintage nightstands I found on Facebook Marketplace for $150 each and a $200 antique chest of drawers that brought warmth and history into the room.

I love mixing antique and vintage pieces with newer furniture because that’s what keeps a room from looking like everything arrived on the same delivery truck from Target on a Tuesday afternoon.

And especially in a modern French country bedroom, a few old pieces go a long way.

You don’t need an entire room full of antiques.

One beautiful old chest beside a brand-new bed can be enough.

Layering the Bedroom Lighting

Lighting was something I planned intentionally from the very beginning.

Instead of relying on one overhead light in the middle of the ceiling, we layered several light sources throughout the room.

We added a crystal fandelier overhead for ambient light and much-needed airflow. (Just a heads up, we decided this particular fandelier didn’t create enough of a breeze for our liking, so we will replace it with the same model as our tried and true crystal fandelier we have at home.)

Then we added plenty of reading light beside the bed, plus another table lamp on the antique chest across the room.

Spreading light sources around the space means that at night, you can turn off that big overhead fixture and let the smaller pools of warm light do their thing.

Instant cozy.

Adding Texture With a Jute Rug

Even though the room already had beautiful wood floors, it needed something soft underfoot and another layer of texture.

A large jute rug with a subtle geometric print did exactly that.

Its natural texture works beautifully against the polished antique furniture, creamy walls, blue toile, and crisp white bedding without introducing another competing pattern.

Hanging Curtains High and Wide

For the large sliding glass doors, we added blackout faux linen pinch-pleat curtains.

And, as always, we hung them high and wide.

Hanging curtains closer to the ceiling and extending the rod beyond the window or door frame visually makes the opening look larger and allows as much natural light into the room as possible when the curtains are open.

That was especially important here because that big glass door is the room’s only source of natural light.

A Giant Vintage Mirror to Bounce the Light

Then I found one of my favorite pieces in the entire room at a local antique shop: a HUGE vintage mirror.

Besides adding another beautiful old element to the room, we strategically placed it where it could reflect light coming through the sliding glass door.

With the table lamp glowing in front of it, the mirror helps bounce even more light around the room in the evenings too.

Pretty and hardworking. We like our decor to earn its keep around here.

Keeping the Bedding Simple

With the canopy bed, toile fabric, molding, fireplace, vintage furniture, and crystal lighting already providing plenty of personality, I didn’t want to introduce another busy pattern on the bed.

So we kept the bedding simple and hotel-like with a classic duvet and layered a vintage-style embroidered quilt for just a little extra texture.

That’s something I come back to over and over again when decorating.

Not every element in a room needs to be the interesting one.

If you already have a statement bed, patterned fabric, antique furniture, and beautiful architectural details, plain bedding gives your eyes somewhere to rest.

Simple French Country Bedroom Decor

The finishing touches were surprisingly minimal.

A vintage-style painting above the fireplace, candles, simple white flowers, leafy green stems, and a few carefully chosen accents.

And that was really all the room needed.

Once we’d added so much character through the molding, furniture, textiles, lighting, and fireplace, piling on more accessories would have taken away from the peaceful feeling we’d worked so hard to create.

The Finished Modern French Country Bedroom

Standing in this room now feels completely different from where we started.

It’s still the same hardwood floors, 8-foot ceilings, and big sliding glass door.

But now the room has layers. It has character. It feels like it has been collected over time, even though most of this transformation happened in a matter of weeks.

The creamy walls soften everything. The black canopy bed gives the room structure. The toile adds just enough pattern. The antique furniture brings some soul. And all of those warm pools of light make the entire space glow at night.

It feels like a breath of fresh air and a warm hug at the same time.

And maybe my favorite part is knowing that someday, after our friends have spent years serving other people far away from home, they’ll walk back into this room.

Hopefully, it’ll feel like their own little peaceful retreat waiting for them.

And really, that’s what home should be.
