Two simple methods to install a picture light without hardwiring or an electrician, so you can showcase artwork in any room with ease.
Artwork instantly changes the feel of a room. Whether it’s an antique print, a vintage photograph, or a modern painting, the right piece brings warmth and personality. I’ve shared tips before on where to find free antique art and affordable vintage prints online, but there’s one accessory that elevates even inexpensive art: a picture light.
A picture light gives focus and polish to wall art, creating a gallery-like effect in your home.

Why Hardwired Picture Lights Aren’t Always the Best Option
Many picture lights require hardwiring, which typically means hiring an electrician. That adds expense and creates a permanent change you might later regret—especially if you like rotating art or rearranging rooms often.
There are two straightforward DIY approaches we use to get the same polished look without permanent wiring. Both can be completed in about 30 minutes and don’t require electrical work. They let you add atmosphere and highlight artwork while keeping flexibility.
Two Ways to Install a Picture Light Without Hardwiring
Plug-In Art Lighting
For a recent home office lounge makeover, I wanted the artwork to be the focal point and also to serve as a bedside reading light for the leather sofa. A plug-in picture light was the perfect solution.

Supplies
- Plug-in picture lamp
- Level
- Cord cover
- Paint that matches your wall
- Small angled sash brush
- Pencil
Step 1 – Mount the Art First
Hang the artwork where you want it before installing the light. That ensures the light will be centered and positioned correctly. A common guideline is to place the center of the artwork roughly 60 inches from the floor, but adjust to suit your space.

Step 2 – Mount the Plug-In Picture Light
With the art in place, mark the center above it where the light should sit. Remove the artwork and use the screw kit included with the lamp to secure the fixture to the wall. Use a level to ensure the light is straight.
Step 3 – Conceal the Cord with a Cord Cover
Choose the outlet you’ll use and plan the cord route. Run the lamp’s cord into a paintable cord cover and adhere it to the wall. Make sure the cover runs straight down or along molding so it looks intentional; a level can help keep it perfectly vertical.

Step 4 – Paint the Cord Cover to Match the Wall
Once the cord cover is in place, paint it to match the wall so it blends in. An angled sash brush works well for neat coverage. This simple step makes the installation look clean and intentional.

That’s all it takes—no electrician required. Cord covers are also useful for concealing cables under TVs or around media areas, a handy trick for keeping rooms tidy.

Battery-Powered Wireless Picture Light
If you don’t have an outlet nearby, a battery-powered picture light is an excellent alternative. These wireless fixtures are easy to install and often include a remote control for convenience.
Battery lights let you control brightness, color temperature, and daily timers without any wiring. Many have settings for daylight or warm soft light; I prefer a warm tone to create a cozy atmosphere. To give a plastic-cased light a vintage look, you can apply a metallic finish product designed for small decorative surfaces.

Step 1 – Use the Template to Mount the Wireless Light
Most wireless picture lights come with a paper template or mounting guide. Use it to mark screw locations directly above your artwork, then attach the light with the included hardware. The process is quick and accurate.
Step 2 – Set the Timer and Remote Options
Use the remote to program daily on/off times, select brightness, and pick the color tone. Timer settings help conserve battery life; how often you need to change batteries depends on daily use. Rechargeable batteries are a cost-effective, eco-friendly option if you plan to run the light regularly.

Recommended Plug-In and Wireless Picture Lights
There are many quality plug-in and battery-powered picture lights available. Look for models with adjustable brightness, a durable finish, and clear installation instructions. A timeless finish—brass, gold, or black—helps the light complement a variety of frames and décor styles.

Picture lights are an easy, affordable way to make artwork feel important and intentional. Whether you choose a plug-in fixture or a battery-powered option, both methods provide flexible, electrician-free solutions to highlight the pieces you love.
