How to Plan IKEA Laundry Room Cabinets Like a Pro

If you’ve followed our laundry room updates, you know we’re ready to give this hardworking space a real transformation. The room isn’t huge, so every inch must be purposeful. Because laundry rooms demand function first (with a healthy dose of style), we planned carefully before making any changes.

We decided to use IKEA laundry room cabinets because IKEA’s kitchen cabinet system is modular, affordable, and flexible—perfect for creating a custom-feeling laundry room on a budget. I spent many hours in IKEA’s kitchen planner to refine a layout that maximizes storage, workflow, and style. The result is a compact, efficient plan I’m excited to share.

The inspiration images helped me visualize how to arrange appliances and cabinets in a narrow space so it feels organized rather than cluttered.

One of my favorite ideas was placing a tall cabinet beside the window, but a circuit breaker box blocks that exact spot in our room. Still, the design concept guided how to use vertical storage in a narrow layout.

The Vision for Our Laundry Room

Our goal is a calm, efficient laundry room with smart storage, a functional folding surface, and systems that keep everyone’s clothes organized. The plan focuses on hidden storage to conceal detergent and supplies, dedicated spots for sorting and folding, and individual basket storage so clean laundry doesn’t end up in a heap on the couch.

To accomplish that, we designed a three-wall layout that combines lower and upper cabinets with specialized storage solutions.

Wall One: The Workhorse Wall

This wall will house the washer and dryer and serve as the room’s main work surface. Key features include:

  • A long countertop that doubles as a folding area and temporary staging space for laundry.
  • A slim broom cupboard for tall cleaning tools like mops and brooms.
  • A pull-out bin for dirty towels and miscellaneous laundry items.
  • A tall cabinet designed to hold individual baskets for each family member, making sorting and putting away clean clothes much easier.

Wall Two: The Window Wall

Below the window we’ll add drawer stacks for additional storage and another countertop for folding and small tasks. A compact step ladder will tuck away here to reach upper cabinets safely. A planned sink had to be removed because it would have been too close to the circuit breaker, so we prioritized more usable storage instead.

Wall Three: The Slim Storage Wall

This narrower wall is ideal for specialty storage:

  • A fold-down drying rack for delicates and quick air-dry items.
  • An ironing board cabinet so the board stays concealed and out of the way when not in use.

Design Details

To keep the room feeling bright and timeless, we chose IKEA’s off-white cabinet fronts. The classic look pairs well with vintage-inspired touches—like gathered fabric behind glass-front uppers—to soften the cabinetry and hide clutter while maintaining character.

Beadboard paneling will wrap the room to add texture and classic charm; it also simplifies finishing new drywall. For flooring, we’ll install a durable luxury vinyl plank in a warm oak tone that resists spills and wear while looking like real wood.

These finishes balance style and durability, giving the room a polished look that stands up to daily use.

Why IKEA Laundry Room Cabinets Work

IKEA cabinets are ideal for a narrow laundry room because they’re configurable to exact dimensions, allowing custom-like solutions without custom pricing. Mixing base cabinets, drawers, tall units, and specialty organizers lets us create efficient storage for cleaning supplies, laundry tools, and baskets while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.

The cost for cabinets, countertops, lighting, and hardware from IKEA is approximately $5,000. Doing the installation ourselves helps control costs, though flooring, paint, and any required plumbing or electrical work will add to the total. If the full remodel comes in under $10,000, it will be a success.

The Next Step

With the design finalized, it’s time to start ordering components and beginning the build. Expect cabinet assembly, drywall and beadboard installation, and plenty of demo work. I’ll share progress as we assemble the cabinets and bring this efficient, organized laundry room to life.
