How to make elegant DIY leaf silhouette art using spray paint and leaves from your yard for a modern boho, designer-look knock-off.
Making art has been my creative focus lately, and this simple DIY leaf silhouette project is one of my favorite quick updates. It’s an easy way to get a high-end, modern boho look without spending a lot on ready-made prints.
Recently I’ve been experimenting with watercolor photo apps to create house portraits and even figuring out how to display art on a regular smart TV so it feels more like a framed piece. And now I’m collecting leaves to spray paint in the driveway—because why not turn yard finds into custom wall art?

If you follow along on my Instagram, you may have seen I’ve been refreshing a small master bathroom to better coordinate with our modern-vintage master bedroom. A thrifty coastal gallery wall I made last year started to feel busy, so I simplified the space with a pair of neutral leaf silhouettes.
This project had a bit of trial and error—my first attempt didn’t turn out perfectly—but with a few adjustments it finished beautifully. Below is a clear, practical step-by-step guide so you can recreate it at home.

Supplies Used:
- XL sketch paper (I used the black paper)
- Leaves and stems of your choice — real or artificial work
- Spray paint in your chosen color
- Small or medium artist’s brush
- Acrylic or mineral paint for touch-ups
- Painter’s tape or temporary spray adhesive
- Drop cloth
- Frames of your choice (I used a simple, neutral pair)

The Steps:
1. Place your paper on a drop cloth outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Arrange leaves and stems in the composition you like. Tip: place the leaf veined-side down (upside-down) so the silhouette edges read cleanly once painted.

2. Secure leaves to the paper using temporary spray adhesive or small pieces of painter’s tape. Spray adhesive helps the leaves lie flat and prevents paint bleed under the edges.

3. Lightly spray the paper and leaves with spray paint. Hold the can at a moderate distance for an even coat and allow the paint to dry completely.
4. Carefully remove the leaves to reveal their silhouettes. If you used tape instead of adhesive or placed leaves the wrong side up, you may see uneven edges. Don’t worry—this is easy to fix.

5. Use a small artist brush and a bit of acrylic paint to carefully outline and fill in any areas that need sharper definition. This step elevates the result from casual craft to gallery-style art.

6. Let the paint dry fully, then place your finished piece in a frame. Hang or lean it in your space and enjoy the instant, curated look.

I’m so pleased with how these turned out—especially since similar silhouette pieces can sell for $300 or more. Using inexpensive materials and a little patience gives you the same clean, modern aesthetic for a fraction of the cost.
Try this technique with a variety of foliage: ferns, palm fronds, magnolia leaves and blooms all create different moods. Playing with scale and color will let you customize the look to any room.
