How to decorate a bedroom in 9 simple ways to create a peaceful, spa-like retreat that awakens the senses and supports well-being.
A fresh start and a new project felt right, so we tackled a master bedroom makeover in just one day—our quickest turnaround yet.
Working within a modest budget, we surprised a dear friend with a calm, beautiful bedroom refresh that feels like a personal oasis.

Instead of the usual list of resolutions, this year I chose to focus on small acts of service: making spaces that help people feel nurtured and cared for. To bring that idea to life, we partnered with Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart to source many of the items for this makeover.

We first met the idea for this makeover when our friend Kristina showed us the pretty teal paint she had used in her bedroom. She’s a resilient and generous person—an educator, cancer survivor and single mom—so we wanted to give her a quiet, restorative space she could truly enjoy.

In about five hours and for under $1,400, we transformed the room into a soothing, spa-like retreat.

Bedroom Decor Ideas That Feel Like a Spa Retreat
Below are the nine simple design choices we focused on to create a calm, elevated bedroom experience that still feels welcoming and livable.

Opt for light, airy textiles
Replacing heavy blinds with woven shades and pairing them with gauzy curtain panels instantly made the room feel larger and softer. Hanging curtains higher than the window frame—even when you can’t extend them far to the sides—creates a taller, more intentional look. Light, translucent fabrics help keep a dark-painted wall feeling open and luminous.

Kristina already owned a great bed and dresser, which gave us a solid foundation for the refresh.

Hang nature-inspired art
Abstract waterscape paintings and subtle botanical prints bring calm energy and visual interest without overwhelming the space. Choose artwork with colors that echo your room palette to reinforce cohesion and serenity.

Choose super-soft bedding
Soft, comfortable bedding is essential for a spa-like bedroom. We layered an affordable, plush comforter set with cozy sheets and neutral throw pillows to create an inviting, lounge-worthy bed. Mixing textures—like a smooth sheet set with a fluffy comforter and textured pillows—adds depth while keeping the look relaxed.

Place mirrors on windowless walls to reflect light
Adding a mirror above the bed or on a dark wall helps bounce natural light around the room, brightening corners that otherwise feel heavy. A simple gold mirror can also serve as a gentle focal point without dominating the palette.

Incorporate textured wood and woven baskets for an earthy vibe
Introducing wooden nightstands and woven baskets adds warmth and functionality. Natural textures from wood and rattan create a grounded, tactile contrast to soft linens and painted walls, while baskets provide attractive, practical storage.

Don’t forget cozy lighting
Warm, soft lighting is crucial for a relaxing atmosphere. We used marble-and-gold bedside lamps and chose bulbs in the soft-white range to create a gentle, inviting glow. Layered lighting—overhead, bedside, and accent—allows for flexibility depending on mood and time of day.

Diffuse essential oils to awaken the senses
An essential oil diffuser on the nightstand can enhance relaxation and support sleep. Scents like eucalyptus can help clear the airways, lavender is known for calming effects, and peppermint can provide a gentle boost when needed. A small tray to keep jewelry and remotes tidy also helps maintain a serene bedside area.

Place photos that tug at your heartstrings
Personal photos or meaningful mementos framed on a nightstand or dresser add warmth and emotional comfort. Choose simple frames that complement the room’s finishes and keep displays uncluttered so the pieces feel intentional rather than busy.

Add botanicals
Plants and botanical prints reinforce the calming, restorative feeling of a spa-inspired bedroom. If you keep a TV in the room, frame it with art or place tall plants nearby so it doesn’t dominate the visual focus. Grouped, matted frames with subtle floral or leaf prints bring softness and a hint of color without competing with the main design.

For this room we added potted succulents, a scented candle, and a few woven baskets to layer texture and bring a comforting, lived-in feel.

We were thrilled with the final result: a soothing, well-balanced bedroom that feels both elevated and comfortable. Most importantly, it now provides a peaceful retreat for Kristina to rest and recharge.
