Dry Brushed Black Mirror: DIY Frame Makeover Guide

Thank you so much for all the kind comments on our powder room reveal earlier this week. Your encouragement genuinely made my day. I’m so grateful for everyone cheering us on through this little renovation journey.

I thought I was done sharing projects from the powder room, but this mirror deserved its own post. It’s a simple, high-impact makeover that can work on any framed mirror or piece of furniture with visible wood grain under a layer of paint. If you have an old mirror or a painted piece that could use a touch of texture and contrast, this technique will bring the grain back to life.

Here’s what the mirror looked like before the makeover.

This house has been all about contrast, so I couldn’t leave a plain, white mirror frame without adding some drama. Beneath the white paint was beautiful, raised wood grain—perfect for a dry brush finish that highlights texture and gives a weathered, industrial feel.

If you’re new to dry brushing, the idea is simple: use a very small amount of a lighter paint on a nearly dry brush and drag it across a darker base coat so the raised grain catches the light paint. The effect recalls metal finishes like brushed zinc or aged pewter and works especially well when you pair a deep, dark base with a bright, light topcoat.

Supplies Used:

  • Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black
  • Fusion Mineral Paint in Picket Fence
  • 2″ angled brush (for applying a solid base coat)
  • Chip brush (for dry brushing)
  • Paper towels or dry rags

For texture, I chose a very dark black as the base and a crisp white for the dry-brushed highlight. Start by painting the entire frame with two even coats of the dark paint, using the 2″ angled brush. Allow the base coat to dry completely before moving on to the dry brushing step.

To dry brush, dip only the tips of the chip brush bristles into the white paint. Then wipe most of the paint off on a paper towel until the brush feels nearly dry. Lightly drag the brush across the black surface, keeping the bristles flat against the frame and moving in one consistent direction. This preserves the natural wood grain pattern while depositing thin streaks of the light paint.

Work in small sections and step back periodically to check the effect. You can always add more dry brushing for more contrast, but it’s harder to remove excess paint once it’s applied. The result should look like subtle highlights along the raised grain, giving the frame a textured, aged appearance without covering the details.

Keep your brush flat and the strokes consistent for a clean, brushed-metal look. After removing any painter’s tape, take a moment to admire the transformation—what was once a plain painted frame now reads like aged metal with pronounced texture.

The finished look leans between industrial and shabby farmhouse—rustic but refined. It’s a small update that packs a big visual punch.

That’s the entire makeover. It’s quick, inexpensive, and effective for adding texture and visual interest to a mirror or similar piece. If you try this technique, adjust the contrast by choosing darker or lighter base and highlight colors to match your decor.

Now that we’ve finished with this mirror, we’re wrapping up a few remaining projects in the living room and the laundry room, and starting to plan seasonal decor. I’ll share more as those spaces come together. Thanks again for the support—you make these projects so much more fun to complete and share.
