6 Ways to Create a Cozy Christmas in an Outdoor Entertaining Space to Make Any Holiday Gathering Warm and Inviting
We’re calling this the party spot!

From now through January 1st, our back porch has become the go-to place for casual Christmas get-togethers with friends and quiet New Year’s evenings. It’s the cozy corner of the house where people gather to chat, roast s’mores, or sip hot cocoa by the fire.
When we first toured this house three years ago, this outdoor space was the feature that convinced us to buy it. The layout had so much potential, and with a little effort it’s become our favorite entertaining spot for warm summer evenings and chilly, fire-lit nights.

It’s also my husband Robert’s and my favorite place for low-key date nights after the kids are in bed.
This year we aimed for a modern rustic lodge look, using warm textures, layered lighting, and a few affordable finds to create a space that feels both festive and relaxed. A faux fireplace added charm while a fire pit table provided real warmth on milder winter nights.

We do hope to eventually convert an old mini-fridge nook into a proper electric fireplace, but for now a quick faux fireplace project gives the look we wanted alongside the fire table for heat.

Full disclosure: while I was sidelined with the flu, Robert took charge of decorating this porch almost entirely on his own. He did a fantastic job — I’m officially promoting him from “assistant to the designer” to assistant designer.
He requested lots of faux-fur throws, chunky knit blankets, and pops of red because he truly loves Christmas. It’s endearing — and a little like living with Buddy the Elf.

6 Ways to Create a Cozy Christmas
1. Mix lots of warm textures.
Layered textures instantly make an outdoor space feel inviting. We used chunky cable-knit blankets, faux-fur throws, and soft pillows so guests can pull something cozy around their shoulders. Varying textures—wool, knit, fur, and woven rugs—adds visual depth and tactile comfort.

2. Add string lights.
Switching off harsh overhead lights and leaving only soft string lights creates a magical, ambient glow. We balanced a flocked pre-lit skinny tree with two additional pre-lit trees and extra strands of lights for a warm twinkle. A simple blanket tucked around each tree base makes a neat, informal “tree skirt.”

3. Use fresh greenery.
Fresh pine branches bring the unmistakable scent of the season. We gather trimmings and bind them into garlands to drape along railings and mantels. Fresh greenery is an inexpensive, natural way to decorate; often tree lots will give small trimmings if you ask.

4. Light a few candles.
Candlelight instantly softens a gathering. For nights when we dine outdoors, we set the table with fresh greenery and a mix of taper and pillar candles in simple holders. Candles add intimacy to an outdoor meal and pair beautifully with string lights for layered illumination.

5. Don’t forget a heat source.
Even in milder climates, a dedicated heat source makes an outdoor space comfortable for longer. A propane fire table or fire pit provides both warmth and a focal point for conversation. Add a basket of extra blankets nearby so guests can layer up as needed.

6. Make a wood stack.
A tidy stack of wood brings a rustic, lodge-like feel to the space. We used a faux fireplace area as a mantel, hanging old stockings and adding a repurposed canvas, mini trees, lanterns, and fresh greenery to complete the look.

Bring on the s’mores and hot cocoa—we’re ready for cozy nights on the porch.
