Dark, dated guest bedroom transformed into a cottage-style retreat in serene blues using Craigslist finds and budget-friendly updates
Three months ago this guest bedroom felt tired and dated. A fresh coat of paint, thrifted furniture makeovers, and a few thoughtful updates turned it into a calm, cottage-inspired space that’s welcoming for guests and practical for everyday family use.

With a busy few months of moving, selling, and renovating behind us, working on this room at my parents’ house became therapeutic. When life gets stressful, I design—whether that’s painting a piece of furniture, rearranging a room, or planning a small makeover. This room became a peaceful outlet and a place to practice budget-friendly decor ideas.
My vision was a cottage-style guest room layered in soft blues and neutrals, with furniture given new life rather than replaced. I wanted the result to feel fresh, relaxed, and practical for overnight guests and for our daughter Olivia when she stays with her grandparents.

Before-and-after photos make a big difference, and while some of the original images were just quick phone shots, the transformation is clear: lighter walls, painted furniture, coordinated textiles, and a few well-placed accessories all contribute to a brighter, more inviting room.

This room needed almost everything replaced or refreshed. Fortunately, we found most of the furniture on Craigslist and local buy/sell groups for very low prices, then repainted and refinished pieces to match the cottage palette. Furnishing the entire room came in at under $600 for the major pieces, not including some smaller decor purchases.

Storage was a priority because the room doubles as a guest space and a place for Olivia’s toys when she stays over. We found a small armoire on Craigslist for $40 and painted it to hold books and toys. A bench provides a spot for luggage, and a window seat still stores a beloved collection of Barbies from my childhood—now Olivia’s favorites, too.

We updated lighting with a modern ceiling fan to help cool the room in summer, and swapped the tiny, dated dresser for a larger piece found for just $20 on a local Facebook group. That dresser was painted and stained into a favorite French blue — one of my most successful furniture flips to date.

Nightstands were found on clearance and given a two-tone paint treatment; bedside lamps came from a mix of stores and sales. Simple window treatment choices—keeping the plantation shutters and adding a classic ticking-stripe cushion to the window seat—kept the room airy and low-maintenance.

Personal touches make the space feel lived-in: a watercolor portrait of my parents’ home, a small collection of hats hung on the wall (including one of my grandfather’s), and thrifted frames and accessories scattered throughout. Most decor items were sourced from thrift shops, clearance aisles, or discount stores, which helped keep the overall budget reasonable.

Budget breakdown (selected highlights):
- Wall color: Behr Seagull Gray (leftover paint used)
- Blue dresser flip: $44 (Facebook Marketplace price + paint)
- Cream cabinet (armoire): $64 (Craigslist + paint)
- Weathered wood-style bed: $140 (Craigslist + paint)
- Nightstands: $148 (clearance + paint)
- Bench: $179 (HomeGoods)
- Rug on sale: $206.97
- Textiles and pillows (various sales): approximately $150
- Ceiling fan: $199
- Custom watercolor portrait: $450
- Assorted thrifted accessories and smaller decor: varied low costs
TOTAL: $1991.20
Given that we started from scratch with furniture, lighting, and textiles, that total is reasonable for a fully furnished guest room. Buying some pieces used and refreshing them with paint and hardware saved a lot compared to buying everything new.

This project was a team effort—my parents handled painting, installing the fan, and moving furniture upstairs, which made the process much faster. The result is a cozy, cottage-style guest room that feels curated but not precious, welcoming for overnight visitors and durable enough for family life.
If you’re planning a guest bedroom makeover, consider these tips: prioritize storage, shop locally for used furniture to save money, pick a calming color palette, and reuse sentimental items to give the room personality without increasing cost. Have you ever furnished a room mostly from thrifted finds? I’d love to hear about your budget-friendly makeovers and tips.
