California Casual Powder Room: Mood Board and Design Ideas

A room design mood board plan for a powder room + a breakdown of California Casual style.

We’re about to launch something I’ve wanted to do since I started this blog: decorating and DIY makeovers for friends and neighbors. Robert and I have been so fortunate to meet many kind people in our community, and over the next few weeks we’ll begin a few small room transformations starting close to home.

One of those projects is a powder room refresh for a family friend who recently moved here from California. After discovering black mold in her small bathroom and fixing the issue over the summer, she asked us to step in and complete the makeover while she’s teaching during the day. We decided to embrace a California Casual approach—light, natural, and relaxed—so the space feels fresh and inviting.

She’s a warm, welcoming person we’ve really enjoyed getting to know, and this little powder room is the perfect chance to try a style we love but haven’t used extensively in our own home.

Here’s what the space looks like right now:

What California Casual style means

If you’ve been on Instagram or Pinterest lately, you’ve likely seen the California Casual look: relaxed, sun-washed interiors that feel simultaneously curated and effortless. For this powder room we’re using those core principles to create a small, calming space.

  • Earthy, natural color palette
  • Light, open, airy feel
  • White or off-white walls
  • Neutral upholstery and textiles
  • Light wood tones and warm metals
  • Lots of plants and handmade pottery
  • Natural, organic materials like wood, rattan, and stone
  • Mid-century Modern silhouettes with clean, simple lines
  • Ethnic and artisanal textiles—rugs, pillows, and woven accents

Design teams like Studio McGee and Amber Interiors consistently interpret this style well, and that’s the aesthetic we’re referencing for the makeover.

Below are the components we’ve chosen for the mood boards—practical pieces that will help achieve the California Casual look while keeping the room bright and functional.

Vanity, mirror, lighting (we’ll spray-paint a budget fixture black), faucet, small rug, soap dispenser, hand towel, towel ring. Paint colors: Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and Stonington Gray.

Frames, art prints (I may create a free printable if time allows), and a coordinating rug to ground the space.

Floating shelves with simple brackets, a faux or live plant in a handmade-style planter, toilet paper holder, small wastebasket, candle, woven baskets, and ceramic canisters for storage. A decorative orb for a little visual interest.

We aimed to keep the palette soft and natural, with texture and layered accents doing the heavy lifting rather than bold color. The goal is a fresh, inviting powder room that reads timeless and relaxed—true to California Casual.

This project is an opportunity to try a slightly different aesthetic than our usual work and to practice combining practical updates with elevated details. We’re excited to bring warmth and personality to this small bathroom while keeping the design clean, functional, and budget-conscious.

What do you think about this direction? We welcome feedback as we finalize selections and begin the makeover. Above all, it feels good to give this kind, deserving neighbor a space that reflects warmth, calm, and a sense of home.
