Build an IKEA Pantry Cabinet with Hemnes

How to turn an IKEA Hemnes cabinet into a freestanding pantry cupboard and give it a custom, high-end look with antique mirror window film.

We finally solved our pantry problem by creating a freestanding IKEA pantry cupboard using IKEA Hemnes glass-front cabinets and antique mirror window film. This DIY pantry looks custom and ties into our kitchen while adding functional food storage where we needed it most.

Kitchen Pantry 2.0: we kept the design streamlined and practical so the pantry functions well while looking like a built-in piece. If your kitchen has limited cabinet space or no pantry at all, this IKEA solution is a smart, budget-friendly way to add deep storage without a full remodel.

We cook at home most nights and entertain often, so we needed accessible, organized storage. Before this project our canned goods, snacks, and baking supplies were scattered across cabinets and the laundry room. The Hemnes pantry cabinet solution changed that.

Why an IKEA Pantry Cabinet Might Be Your Best Solution

If you lack a built-in pantry, a freestanding cabinet is a fast, affordable way to add organized food storage. Two Hemnes glass-front cabinets paired together give you deep shelves and drawers for bulk items, small appliances, baking supplies, and snacks. They’re large enough to hold what a typical family needs but remain movable and reversible should you want to rearrange the kitchen later.

We relocated a coffee bar and repurposed that wall for the pantry. If a current layout isn’t working, don’t be afraid to change it—function should come before purely decorative choices.

Using IKEA Organizers as a Kitchen Cabinet Food Storage Solution

Before building the freestanding pantry we experimented with vertical organizers and shelf systems, but the best long-term fix was dedicated cabinet space. Once we combined two Hemnes units, we gained consistent shelf depth and drawer storage that works with baskets, clear bins, and labeled containers for easy access.

The project required assembling two Hemnes cabinet bodies, painting them to match our cabinetry, and applying antique mirror window film to the glass doors to disguise food inside while reflecting light and adding a designer feel.

Supplies Used

(Some tools and materials mentioned are common products you can find from paint and hardware suppliers.)

  • 2 IKEA Hemnes glass-front cabinets
  • Kilz Adhesion Primer or similar adhesion-promoting primer
  • Cabinet/trim enamel paint in your chosen color (we used a satin finish to match existing cabinets)
  • Quality angled paint brush
  • Masking liquid (optional but recommended for painting around glass)
  • Antique mirror window film for glass fronts
  • Spray bottle with water and a few drops of dish soap
  • Scissors, Sharpie, and a squeegee or credit card for smoothing
  • X-acto knife or razor for trimming film
  • Paper towels or clean, dry rags

The Steps

1. Assemble the Hemnes cabinets following the included instructions. Having someone who enjoys the process helps—assembly is essentially large-scale flat-pack furniture construction.

2. Prepare the cabinet surfaces for paint. For laminate and prefinished surfaces use a dedicated adhesion primer. Proper priming prevents scuffing and chipping.

3. Paint cabinet frames and doors after priming. Allow primer and paint to fully cure before moving to the glass treatment.

IKEA Pantry Cabinet Painting Tip

Brush on masking liquid around the glass before painting the door frames. Masking liquid peels away cleanly, protecting glass from paint and saving time on cleanup. If paint has already been applied and dried on glass, removing it is possible but more time-consuming.

4. To disguise pantry contents and add a reflective finish, apply antique mirror window film to the glass doors. This decorative film creates the look of antiqued mirror and helps bounce light into the room, coordinating with stainless appliances and brightening the interior wall.

5. Measure the glass panel on the cabinet door and add about one inch to width and height for trimming allowance.

6. Mark the measurements on the film backing and cut to size with scissors.

7. On a flat surface, peel the film backing slowly while misting the adhesive side with the water-and-soap solution until fully wetted.

8. Spray the glass on the cabinet door as well. Position the film on the glass, starting near the top and allowing it to settle into place.

9. Smooth the film from the middle outward with a squeegee or credit card to remove air bubbles and excess solution.

10. Trim excess film along the glass edges with an X-acto knife and wipe away remaining moisture. Allow the film to cure according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Ta da—your Hemnes becomes a freestanding pantry with a high-end antique-mirror look.

IKEA Pantry Cabinet Storage Solutions

After installing the cabinets, organize the inside with clear bins, labeled containers, and pull-out baskets to maximize usability. Group items by use—baking, snacks, canned goods, breakfast items—and place frequently used items at eye level. Deeper shelves benefit from stackable organizers to prevent wasted vertical space.

The Final Pantry Cabinet Results

The finished pantry matches our kitchen cabinetry and reads like a custom piece rather than a temporary solution. Because the units are freestanding, we won’t have to demo the cabinets when we eventually replace flooring or make other changes. Important safety note: always anchor tall cabinets to the wall to prevent tipping.

The Rest of Our Budget Kitchen Refresh

This pantry was part of a larger budget-friendly kitchen refresh that focused on paint, hardware, and smart storage updates. A painted freestanding pantry is a high-impact, low-cost upgrade for kitchens that need better organization without a full renovation.

We continue to refine our internal cabinet organization, and after a few iterations we settled on systems that work for our family.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you paint IKEA furniture?

You should use an adhesion primer designed for slick surfaces, then follow with a quality enamel or cabinet paint. Proper surface preparation—cleaning, light sanding when required, and using a primer—will help paint adhere and resist chipping.

How has your painted IKEA pantry cabinet held up over time?

After two years the antique mirror film has held up well and the painted surfaces that received the full prep—liquid sandpaper and adhesion primer—are still intact. Areas where primer was skipped experienced some wear, so it’s worth taking the extra prep steps to ensure long-term durability.

How do you organize a freestanding pantry cupboard?

Group items by category, use clear bins for small or loose items, label shelves or bins, and place frequently used foods at eye level. Pull-out baskets or stackable containers help maximize deep shelves. Personalize the system to your family’s routines for best results.
