This really has been the summer of backyard projects. Between our pool makeover, the pool shed refresh, and the back porch update, we’ve poured a lot of love into this yard since spring. These improvements are part of a larger backyard renovation plan to make the outdoor space more usable and fun for our family.
Thankfully, June has been mild and pleasant—perfect for working outside. In the hot, humid summers of the South I usually sweat through everything, so the cooler weather has been a welcome relief while tackling landscaping and yard work.
When we first moved in we loved how heavily wooded the backyard was. The trees created privacy on our half-acre lot and made the yard feel much larger than it actually is. The neighborhood’s mature trees were one of the biggest things that sold us on this house.
Of course, too many trees and overgrown brush can limit how you actually use the space. We realized we were sacrificing areas to play, run, and entertain because the yard felt crowded and uneven in places.
Olivia even volunteered to model the space for us—complete with all the enthusiasm of a backyard photoshoot. 😉

We started by removing the old pergola that had significant wood rot and was falling apart. Robert and a friend carefully dismantled it, and while they were at it they gathered piles of old bricks that had been scattered through the yard. Those bricks are set aside to be repurposed into a fire pit area later—waste not, want not.

We also took down sections of fence that were barely standing and cleared out years of overgrowth. Because tree removal can be dangerous and requires the right equipment, we saved up for two years to hire a professional tree service to handle the larger jobs safely.

After the big clearing, the backyard opened up in a way we didn’t expect. We still have plenty of wooded privacy at the back of the lot for shade and a natural screen, but the main yard is now a much more functional, usable space.

With the trees and brush removed, our next steps are focused on landscaping and practicality: we’ll grade the yard for improved drainage, overseed and strengthen the lawn, and use the saved bricks to create a cozy fire pit area. We’re also planning to build a playhouse and a small playground so the girls will have a dedicated, safe place to play.
Opening up the yard creates opportunities for lawn games, a vegetable or flower garden, and extended entertaining space. Making thoughtful choices now—like grading for drainage and investing in quality soil and seed—will help the lawn thrive and reduce maintenance later on.
What backyard features do you love most for getting the most enjoyment out of your outdoor spaces? We’re excited to make new memories in this refreshed yard and are already dreaming up family-friendly layouts and activities.
