Back to School Style Guide: Schoolhouse Desk Homework Station

If you’ve followed this blog for a while, you might remember that seven years and a million hand sanitizer bottles ago I started my first real job—teaching ninth grade. And if you’re visiting from 11 Magnolia Lane for this year’s Back-To-School Style Guide, welcome!

For about five years after that first day in my teacher shoes, I had a love/hate relationship with the start of the school year. The first day was equal parts terrifying, exhausting, exciting, and everything in between.

I eventually put my classroom copies of Shakespeare away and became a stay-at-home mom. Now our little one is turning four next month, and suddenly homework feels like it’s just around the corner.

It must have been fate—or thrift store luck—because earlier this summer I found an antique schoolhouse desk that was clearly asking for a second life.

When my friend Amber at Restless Arrow invited me to take part in the Back-To-School Style Guide, this slightly neglected, perfectly charming little desk practically winked and said, “Take me home and make me pretty.”

The desk did have some character—mainly in the form of pen and marker scribbles—so I decided to restore it and turn it into a sweet, practical homework station for our playroom.

If you ever find a scribbled-up desk or table at a flea market or thrift shop, here’s how I brought this one back to life.

Supplies used:

  • Mouse sander with coarse grit sandpaper pads
  • Minwax stain in Weathered Oak (or a similar wood stain)
  • Minwax polyurethane in satin (or your preferred clear coat)
  • Two sponge brushes
  • Clean, dry rags

The makeover was quick because the desk simply needed thorough sanding to remove the pen and marker layers. After sanding, I wiped off all the dust and applied two coats of the Weathered Oak stain, following the manufacturer’s instructions and wiping away excess after a couple of minutes. Once the stain fully dried for 24 hours, I sealed the surface with a coat of satin polyurethane.

I almost painted the metal parts, but after asking on Instagram, most of you recommended keeping the original black metal to preserve the desk’s antique character. I’m glad I listened—the contrast of dark metal and warm wood feels authentic and charming.

Voila: a fully restored antique schoolhouse desk that looks like it belongs in a storybook classroom. I still can’t believe I scored it at a thrift store.

We’re not quite at full-time homework mode yet, but for now the desk is a small creative corner where Olivia can make art, practice writing, or work on basic math with me. It lives in our playroom, which will be getting a makeover in the coming months, so I kept the setup simple and easy to move.

To decorate the area I made a quick garland from twine, paper clips, and a few old math flashcards. I also hung a few of Olivia’s colorful drawings on a clipboard and directly on the wall for a playful, rotating display.

If you want to create your own simple homework station, you can look for a small desk or table with good bones, pair it with a comfortable chair, and add a few baskets or jars to organize pencils, crayons, and supplies. A clipboard or simple corkboard makes a great spot to hang rotating artwork or schedules.

Olivia is already smitten with her new little corner of the playroom, and I love that the desk is both beautiful and practical. If she inevitably adds a few scribbles of her own someday, I know I can rescue the finish again with another quick sanding and fresh coat of stain.

This project felt like a small but meaningful way to welcome the new school routines on the horizon—whether that’s preschool, family learning time, or more formal homework down the road.
