We meant to share more backyard progress today, but the weekend had other plans: a small project went sideways and we spent time caring for a sick child. It slowed us down, but it also gave me extra time to think through the plan for our next outdoor build — a pool cabana.

We recently poured fresh concrete beside the pool and plan to erect a pergola for much-needed shade. Down the road we’ll consider concrete stamping for texture, but for now the focus is structure, shade, and visual flow. The existing fence will be replaced with a new white one to brighten the area and create a clean backdrop for the cabana.
Outdoor furniture has been selling out quickly this year, so I pulled together seven distinct cabana inspirations to shape our design direction. The common thread I’m after is an airy, natural feel with layered texture — think rattan, wood, soft fabrics, and abundant greenery. All of the examples below emphasize relaxed comfort while keeping a cohesive, nature-forward aesthetic.
7 Pool Cabana Inspirations
1. Comfortable chaise loungers are a simple, elegant foundation. A pair of well-upholstered loungers creates a classic poolside scene and keeps the space functional for sunning, reading, or napping.

2. Lush plants and a rattan pendant add instant texture and warmth. Introducing potted palms or tall tropical plants helps frame the cabana and makes the space feel like a private oasis.

3. A boho approach with rattan and bamboo feels effortless and relaxed. While our yard won’t be a jungle, introducing woven materials and layered textiles will achieve a similar, inviting vibe.

4. A wood slat wall adds modern structure and subtle privacy. It’s a clean, graphic element that pairs well with white fabric and natural furnishings to balance warmth and minimalism.

5. Compact but well-proportioned — this cabana makes efficient use of pool deck space without blocking sightlines. Consider size carefully so you retain ample circulation around the pool.

6. Sheer white curtains bring movement and softness. Lightweight gauze panels fluttering in the breeze are an easy way to create privacy, diffuse midday sun, and add an elegant, resort-like feel.

7. The warmth of natural wood contrasts beautifully with a white fence, creating a cozy, inviting atmosphere. We’re still deciding whether to stain a mid-tone for warmth or paint the structure white for a crisp look — each option changes the overall mood.

Planning Considerations and Practical Tips
As inspiration turns into a build, here are a few practical considerations we’re keeping in mind: orientation relative to the sun for optimal shade, pergola sizing so it doesn’t overwhelm the deck, circulation around the pool, resilient materials for humidity and sun exposure, and furniture choices that are both comfortable and durable. Curtains or screens can offer privacy and soft shade, while built-in seating or storage benches help keep the deck tidy. For finishes, a neutral mid-tone stain will lend warmth and hide wear, whereas a crisp white paint creates a clean, coastal feel but may require more maintenance.
Right now my head is full of options, but the priority is simple: shade and comfort. Everything else — the styling, textiles, and accessories — will come together after the structure is in place. I’ll be glad to have shade first; prettiness is an added bonus. Which of these looks would you choose for a pool cabana?
