I’m always drawn to dramatic before-and-after projects that take days or weeks to complete — the kind where every hour of work finally pays off. Those big transformations are addictive (like the time we painted our kitchen cabinets or sanded concrete countertops until they were smooth). But sometimes you want a quick, impactful refresh without the marathon of effort.
That’s how this recent bathroom update felt: almost magical. No major electrical work, no replacement of plumbing — just a few simple swaps that brightened the space and modernized the vanity area in minutes.

When planning Olivia’s bathroom makeover — which also serves as our guest bath — I considered removing the faucets and light fixture to spray paint them in antique brass. In the end, that felt like more hassle than it was worth. The fixtures were in good condition, and the goal for this room was to create a fresh look with minimal cost and effort.
What dated the vanity light most were the frosted shades. After searching options on Amazon, Home Depot, and Lowe’s, I found clear seeded glass replacement shades at Lowe’s last week — the same style we used in an earlier Lowe’s bathroom makeover this spring. They were inexpensive and simple to install.

Installation was straightforward: I unscrewed the frosted shades, replaced them with the new seeded glass, and swapped the standard bulbs for LED Edison-style bulbs. That small change immediately brightened the room and updated the look without touching the fixture base or wiring.
I was genuinely surprised how much of a difference a simple shade and bulb swap could make. The vanity feels lighter and more modern, and the space no longer reads dim or dated.

I’ve also been finishing up the vanity cabinet paint this week and will share that soon. These small updates — fresh paint, new shades, and brighter bulbs — add up to a real transformation without a huge budget or weeks of disruption.

Current progress on the project to-do list:
Paint walls (Magnolia Home Weekend) — donePaint trim (Benjamin Moore Simply White) — donePaint doors (Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron) — donePaint sink and tub/shower with Rustoleum Tub & Tile Refinishing Kit — doneRefresh light fixture — done- Paint vanity cabinet (nearly finished)
- Paint tile grout
- Hang wall decor (partially complete)
- Decorate and style
We decided to keep the floors simple: a thorough cleaning, freshened grout, and a pretty bath mat. I considered painting the floor, but after dealing with the sink and tub paint fumes that forced us out for a couple of weekends, I opted to avoid more strong-smelling work for now.
Small updates like replacing shades and switching to brighter, warmer LED bulbs are a low-cost way to modernize a bathroom vanity light. You don’t need to change the entire fixture to make a big visual impact.
Have you refreshed a light fixture recently? What inexpensive tricks have you used to update lighting — new shades, different bulbs, a quick polish, or a fresh coat of paint on the metal? I’d love to hear about your projects and tips.
