Sometimes the smallest projects are the most satisfying. This week Robert and I completed several quick garage curb appeal updates that each took less than an afternoon, and together they made a dramatic difference.

Nine years ago we limewashed the brick and painted the garage door Behr Cracked Pepper, which immediately made the exterior feel fresher and more cohesive.

Lately I kept thinking the area was good but could be elevated with a few finishing touches. It didn’t take much—just intentional details to push the whole look from nice to polished.

DIY Copper Lantern Fixtures
First, lighting. We swapped the old black fixtures for traditional copper lantern wall lights on either side of the garage door. Copper instantly lends a timeless, well-worn character that makes a home feel cared for and established.
To achieve an authentic look we painted lantern sconces with high-quality copper finish, aiming for a realistic metal appearance. Adding flickering flame-style bulbs will enhance a vintage gas-lantern vibe if you want a softer, more atmospheric glow in the evenings.

Star Jasmine Trellis
Next, greenery. I planted star jasmine on both sides of the garage and installed wooden lattice for the vines to climb. Star jasmine requires patience—it’s not an instant filler—but within a year or two the fragrant foliage will drape and soften the garage’s hard lines.
The lattice gives structure for vertical growth and will create a welcoming, lived-in look as the vines mature. This kind of planted detail adds texture, scent, and seasonal interest to the garage exterior.
Trash Can Hiding Panels
One of the most practical updates was also the simplest: screening the trash can. It had been sitting by the garage and was an eyesore from the street, so we installed no-dig lattice panels to hide it.
These privacy panels require no concrete or complicated installation—just position and secure. The result is a tidy look that keeps functional items out of view while maintaining easy access when needed.
Carriage Style Garage Door Hardware
To finish, we added a magnetized carriage-door-style hardware kit with decorative handles and hinges. These magnetic pieces clip on easily—no drilling required—and give a high-impact, custom look that photographs like an expensive upgrade.
This detail helps the garage door read as an intentional design feature instead of a basic, utilitarian surface. Small hardware updates often deliver big visual returns for minimal effort.

Curb appeal doesn’t always require an extreme makeover. Often the best results come from high-impact, low-effort updates—copper lanterns, climbing vines, simple lattice, and magnetic hardware that attaches in minutes.
