This summer feels like a “catch-our-breath” season — full of family reunions, road trips, yard work and endless home projects. It’s exciting and totally worth it, but some evenings I flop onto the bed and realize it’s the first time I’ve sat down all day. Whew.

This room came together unexpectedly well, thanks to a lot of lucky finds and a few smart design moves. Between the usual summer chaos and some camera-computer issues, my photos are a little wonky today, but the space itself feels finished and serene.

Just two months ago this room looked completely different. We were fortunate to find our bed, dresser and chest of drawers on a major closeout at a local home decor shop, which gave the whole makeover a strong starting point. From there, everything else fell into place.

We painted the walls Benjamin Moore Moonshine, the ceiling and trim in Benjamin Moore Simply White, and the doors in Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron to help this room flow with the rest of the house. Fresh paint alone makes a huge difference, and those neutral tones create a calm backdrop for summer styling.

I did a little victory dance in the aisles at TJ Maxx when I found our bedding on clearance — still doing a happy jig over here. The rug came from HomeGoods and felt like the missing piece; once it was in place, the room finally made sense. It anchored the bed and tied together the light bedding and darker accents.

To balance the airy white bedding, I hung charcoal IKEA curtains high and wide, just below the crown molding. Hanging curtains closer to the ceiling and extending them beyond the window frame tricks the eye into seeing a taller, larger room — a handy trick for smaller master bedrooms.

I aim to balance feminine and masculine elements. A pair of vintage-style suitcases on the chest add rugged texture and practical storage. The top suitcase belonged to my grandparents and was part of their honeymoon — a sentimental piece that fits perfectly with the more modern furnishings.

A large black arched mirror rests on top of the dresser to brighten and visually expand this windowless wall. We brought it from our previous master bedroom along with other stash pieces, and it helps bounce light around the room.

I rediscovered a stash of faux flowers and tucked them into arrangements that add color without the upkeep. Between the textiles, the wood tones, and the florals, the room feels layered but calm — just right for summer.

We’re not chandelier people — we both sleep hot and prefer white noise. A Channelside fan from Hunter Fan, recently installed, has made a big difference; the textured blades add a rugged touch that balances the lace on our bedding.
