DIY Vintage Writing Desk Makeover: Refinish, Upcycle and Restore

Oh snap — the very first piece of furniture for the guest bedroom has arrived!

It’s a sweet, slightly sophisticated little vintage writing desk that didn’t always look this polished. I found it on Craigslist for $25, and it was the perfect thrifted score to kick off this room’s makeover for Trash to Treasure Transformation Tuesday.

When it first arrived, it was sweet but tired — the kind of piece that benefits from a little vision and elbow grease. After a quick refresh, it now feels refined and purposeful, with just enough vintage charm to fit the mood of the guest bedroom.

It reminds me of those classic makeover montages from ‘90s movies: glasses come off, hair gets done, and the whole vibe transforms. This desk got that same kind of transformation — a little attention to detail and the end result is surprising.

What I Did: Simple Upgrades with Big Impact

To bring this desk back to life I used two coats of Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black, which gave it a rich, durable finish. I also replaced a missing or damaged shelf by cutting a short piece of 1×6 pine for a makeshift replacement. A new pair of aged brass knobs finished the look and elevated the piece from thrifted to curated.

The result is a practical little workspace that’s small enough to fit the guest room without overwhelming it, yet large enough for occasional use. My mother-in-law often works from our house on random days, so I wanted something compact but functional for her.

I also spotted a vintage rattan chair at Goodwill for $17 that pairs perfectly with the desk. It adds texture and warmth, and together they make a cozy, inviting corner in the room.

Progress in the Room

This week we also painted the walls and refreshed the trim in a warm gray that ties everything together. The gray trim feels intentional and adds depth to the room — it’s amazing how much paint alone can change the entire feel of a space.

Robert installed green velvet curtains that are richer in person than I expected. They add a touch of luxury and color contrast, and I’m excited to hem and hang the remaining panels. The new curtains paired with the painted trim and the refreshed desk create a layered look that feels both collected and cohesive.

This corner is just a taste of what’s to come. I recently found a secondhand cane headboard and can’t wait to incorporate it into the final design. The goal is a guest bedroom that feels welcoming and practical, full of character from thrifted finds and thoughtful finishes.
