It’s been just over five years since we limewashed our exterior brick with Romabio Classico Limewash. People often ask: “Do you regret it?” The short answer: absolutely not. We love the softened, antique look it gave our colonial home and, after living with it for several years, we still appreciate its weathered white patina.

We originally traded our 1960s orange brick for a more refined aesthetic, and the limewash instantly gave the façade a classic, aged appearance. Since then, the house went through foundation repairs, which meant the exterior needed a careful cleaning and some protective maintenance.

If you have limewashed brick or are considering it, the cleaning and upkeep are straightforward. Below I share the exact process we used to remove dirt, algae, and staining, touch up the finish, and protect the surface so it lasts for many years.

What is Limewash?

Limewash is a traditional coating made from slaked lime that has been used for centuries to protect and finish masonry. Modern formulations, like Romabio Classico Limewash, are produced from natural limestone and are designed to create an authentic, breathable patina on brick and stone.

Unlike standard paint, limewash chemically bonds to masonry, forming a calcified, chalk-like surface that allows moisture to evaporate. It’s ideal for concealing irregularities in older brick while providing a historically accurate appearance.

You can customize the final look by washing off portions of the limewash to expose underlying brick for a partially exposed, antique effect. The finish is breathable and protective while remaining authentic to traditional masonry techniques.

How to Spot Clean Limewashed Brick

Genuine limewash resists mold and UV fade and doesn’t require primer. If spots or smudges appear, start with a soft brush and mild soap, then rinse gently with a garden hose on low pressure. Avoid high-pressure washing, which can remove limewash layers and damage the finish.

For larger areas of biological growth—algae, moss, or mildew—use a dedicated masonry cleaner formulated for limewash surfaces to avoid discoloration or etching.

Step 1 – Use an Algae & Moss Cleaner

In our case, foundation work had left red clay stains along the base of the house and moss on steps and shaded areas. We had our contractor apply Romabio Algae & Moss Cleaner with a pump sprayer and let it sit for 48 hours. The cleaner lifted algae and organic stains, turning affected areas a bright orange as it worked, and then rinsed away easily.

Step 2 – Touch Up Limewash

After rinsing, we blended a few thin touch-up coats of Romabio Classico Limewash where the cleaning had revealed inconsistencies. Use a small masonry brush to feather the edges for a seamless finish. Touch-ups help restore the uniform look and prepare the surface for protection.

Step 3 – Protect the Limewash

Once the surface was dry, our contractor applied one coat of Romabio Mineral Shield as a clear topcoat. This invisible sealer repels water, reduces staining from clay and grass, and slows weathering—especially useful on horizontal surfaces like steps, stoops, and planters. Apply with a brush or sprayer and allow proper curing time before heavy use.

Our Cleaned Limewash Exterior: Results and Longevity

After the cleaning, touch-ups, and protective sealer, our limewashed brick looks refreshed and is better protected against future staining. Proper maintenance like this can extend the life of the finish and minimize the need for frequent reapplication.

We’re happy with the outcome: the house keeps its timeless character and requires only occasional attention to maintain that softened, antique appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brick Limewash

How long does limewash last on brick?

In mild climates, a properly applied limewash finish can last 20–30 years. In wetter or harsher climates, using a clear sealer like Mineral Shield can extend durability and decrease staining.

Does limewash turn brick pink?

No. Authentic limewash dries to an opaque, calcified white finish. It may appear milky while wet, but it sets to a solid white tone. Some other products or whitewash formulations can react differently, but true limewash will not turn brick pink.

Can I use limewash over painted brick?

Limewash bonds to porous, unpainted masonry. It will not adhere properly to previously painted brick. For painted surfaces, choose a masonry paint designed for that substrate for a long-lasting opaque finish.

Can I hire a painter to apply limewash?

Limewashing is a specialized technique that benefits from experienced applicators. Hiring an artisan or a contractor trained in limewash application ensures correct preparation, mixing, and finishing. Look for professionals familiar with traditional lime-based products.
