DIY Industrial Laundry Hamper Makeover

Waste not, want not—that’s my motto every time I wander into the neighborhood thrift shop. I go often, and I almost always come away with projects and ideas. Some of them never make it past my imagination, but once in a while I find something that transforms exactly the way I pictured it.

This is one of those times. I picked up a simple wicker-style hamper—some people might call it a trash can or a pet food bin—and gave it an industrial-inspired makeover that ended up being a perfect fit for our master bathroom.

When I found it, the piece wasn’t awful—just a little scuffed on top and plain enough to beg for a makeover. I wanted something with a clean, industrial feel, so I started by giving it two coats of Annie Sloan paint in Coco for a warm, neutral base.

After the paint dried, I decided to add a stencil to give it a more industrial, factory-style look. I used simple letter stencils from the hardware aisle and black craft paint to create a bold, utilitarian graphic across the front. Stenciling is an easy way to add character and personality without a lot of fuss—just go slowly, hold the stencil steady, and use a dry brush to avoid bleeding.

The original knob hole needed attention, so I filled it with spackling and sanded it smooth before painting. Small repairs like this make a big difference in the finished look and help the piece feel custom and well-made.

To age the finish and bring in a hint of depth that mimics reclaimed wood or metal, I applied a thin coat of Annie Sloan Dark Wax. I worked in small sections and buffed it back so that some of the lighter base paint still showed through—this keeps the finish from looking flat and gives it a subtle, lived-in quality.

For a finishing touch, I added a pipe-style handle I found at Hobby Lobby on sale. The industrial silhouette of the handle pulls the whole look together and makes the hamper feel like a high-end, purpose-built piece rather than something thrifted. Simple hardware swaps like this are one of my favorite ways to elevate thrifted finds.

The end result is a functional, stylish hamper that fits perfectly in our master bathroom. Before this, dirty clothes were piled on the floor beside the cabinet—embarrassing and messy. Now everything has its place, and the piece complements the rustic ladder towel rack and the new faux shiplap backdrop we installed. It’s a small change, but it makes the space feel more finished and intentional.

Budget breakdown: I paid only $9 for the hamper. I already had most of the paint and wax on hand, and with the stencils and handle added, the total cost was about $20—an affordable way to gain storage and style. If you enjoy thrifting, painting, and a bit of DIY, you can turn inexpensive finds into pieces that look custom-made.

If you’re planning a similar project, here are a few quick tips:

  • Clean and sand the surface before painting to ensure adhesion.
  • Use light layers of paint and build up coverage rather than applying one heavy coat.
  • When stenciling, use a dry brush and minimal paint to avoid bleeding under the stencil.
  • Dark wax or glaze can add depth—apply sparingly and wipe back until you achieve the desired look.
  • Swapping hardware is an easy, inexpensive way to change a piece’s style.
