How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost? Budget Breakdown

Full budget breakdown of a real master bathroom remodel, plus practical tips for saving money on a renovation.

Estimating the cost of a bathroom remodel can feel impossible these days. Material shortages, fluctuating contractor rates, labor availability, and the size of the space all influence the final price—and location matters too. To help clarify what to expect, I’m sharing a detailed cost breakdown from our recent 60-square-foot en suite remodel so you can better plan your own renovation budget.

The numbers below won’t remove every unknown from your planning process, but they should give you a realistic baseline and highlight where the biggest expenses usually fall.

The most important financial lesson we learned while remodeling

We were unexpectedly forced into this remodel after water damage, so we had very little time to research before work began. That made it a steep learning curve.

Although we’d worked with contractors before, this project left us less prepared than usual. If we could do it again, the top change would be clearer, earlier communication about budget and costs. Ask from day one: “How much will this part of the project cost?” and keep those lines of communication open throughout the job.

Despite the initial scramble, we’re very happy with the result. Below is a transparent breakdown of labor, materials, what we did ourselves, and the total cost.

A few context points about our remodel cost

  • Supply chain challenges this summer increased prices for some materials, which raised our overall spend.
  • Because the remodel followed a water-damage insurance claim, homeowners insurance covered a substantial portion. That made it reasonable to upgrade features we’d postponed for years.
  • Normally we’d tackle more of the work ourselves, but the timing—a summer without A/C that forced us to live with family for a month—left us too overwhelmed to DIY major tasks.

Bathroom remodel labor costs

General carpentry / painting / contracting labor – $2,275.44

This covered demolition and disposal, new drywall hanging and finishing, subfloor replacement to repair water damage, framing the shower, installing a moisture barrier and shower pan, creating shower niches, installing the undermount sink and placing the vanity.

Plumbing labor – $4,915.38

Plumbing included rough-ins for two wall-mounted sink faucets and the shower, setting the toilet, and installing two shower valves and heads. Wall-mounted faucets are elegant but add significant labor costs due to the in-wall work required.

Electrical labor – $1,566.20

Electrical work included wiring for three wall sconce locations, installing a recessed exhaust fan, mounting sconce fixtures, and adding a blank GFCI faceplate.

Tile labor – $6,613.78

Tile work included installing a mortar bed and laying ceramic tiles in a herringbone pattern, tiling the shower walls and ceiling, the shower floor, and recessed shelves.

Shower door labor and materials – $2,933.56

The shower opening required a custom frameless glass door from a local fabricator, including antique brass hinges to match our selected hardware.

Marble countertop and shower ledge labor and materials – $2,178.64

We selected a local marble remnant for the countertop. The fabricator applied a UV treatment, cut the scalloped backsplash, and installed the pieces on site. We also used marble for the shower ledge to create a seamless look.

What we did ourselves to reduce costs

Once we were able to move back into the house at the end of the project, we completed several finishing tasks ourselves to save money. We installed picture-frame molding, hung mirrors, fitted vanity hardware, mounted the toilet paper holder, towel ring and hooks, installed shelves, applied caulk, and handled some patching work. These finishing touches helped lower the final contractor bill.

Bathroom remodel total cost – $29,125.15

This was the largest project we’ve ever tackled. At times it felt overwhelming—especially since we were coordinating other home work at the same time—but the experience left us better equipped for future renovations. After five months of back-and-forth with the insurance company and contractors, we only knew the final price about two weeks before completion. The sticker shock reinforced the importance of requesting early cost estimates so you can make informed budget decisions as work progresses.

Ultimately, the result exceeded our expectations and made the disruption worthwhile.

Takeaways — how to stick to a bathroom renovation budget

  • Plan for at least 20% more than your initial estimate to account for unexpected costs and price fluctuations.
  • Be transparent about your budget with contractors from the start, and ask for line-item estimates so you can prioritize or adjust as needed.
  • Consider look-alike materials—like marble-look ceramic tile—instead of natural stone to save substantially without sacrificing style.
  • Take on DIY tasks where it’s safe and practical: demo, painting, and finishing work can significantly reduce labor costs.
