After an intense week of work, the conference room makeover is complete!
This project began when Amber, the coordinator at The Cottage at Pathways Community Center, in partnership with The Life House Women’s Shelter, asked for help making their office and meeting room feel more like home.

We feel honored to contribute to a space that supports homeless women in our community with counseling, case management, financial education, and employment assistance.
How to Design a Conference Room or Office to Feel Cozy
Whether you’re refreshing a corporate meeting room, a small office, or a room at home, a few thoughtful design choices can transform a sterile space into a calming, welcoming environment. Below are practical, budget-conscious tips we used for this conference room makeover.
Before-and-after photos show how much impact paint, lighting, and furnishings can make. For this room, we chose a moody teal from the Bless’er House Color Collection—Romabio New Hope—which immediately grounded the space and set a warm tone.

Push Together Small Accent Cabinets to Make a Long Sideboard
Large custom furniture can be expensive. To create a long sideboard without breaking the budget, we grouped three small reeded accent cabinets side-by-side. This approach creates the visual of a single, substantial console while providing plenty of storage and flexibility.
You can apply the same idea in living rooms or bedrooms by aligning small chests or dressers to form a longer surface for display and storage.

Set Up a Coffee Station
A coffee station instantly adds warmth and hospitality. For client meetings or counseling sessions, a self-serve coffee nook helps people feel welcome and comfortable.

Coffee Station Supplies & Amenities
- A straightforward, user-friendly coffee maker (keep self-serve machines simple).
- A large tray to corral mix-ins and cups.
- Canisters for coffee grounds and sugar.
- Clearly labeled syrup dispensers for flavor options.
- Spoons, stirrers, and a spoon rest.
- Reusable or recyclable cups and lids.
- A lidded trash can (motion-sensor models reduce contact).
- A divided basket to organize tea varieties.
- Honey sticks, sweetener packets, and creamers.
- A mini fridge for larger creamers or bottled drinks.
- Reusable K-Cups to lower waste.

Use Soft Lighting
Harsh fluorescent lighting can be uncomfortable and even trigger stress for some people. Replacing or supplementing overhead fluorescents with softer light sources—table lamps, wall sconces, pendants—creates a calmer atmosphere and helps regulate mood.

Best Light Bulbs to Use in an Office
For productivity, neutral white or daylight bulbs (4000K–5000K) are appropriate. For counseling or settings where you want a soothing tone, choose soft white bulbs in the 2700K–3000K range to reduce stress and create warmth.

Ceiling Lights in a Drop Ceiling
Drop ceilings can feel institutional, but you can soften them without major electrical work. A plug-in pendant lamp can be attached to the grid with zip ties, routed to an outlet, and concealed with a painted cord cover. It’s a quick, budget-friendly way to add focal lighting.

While hardwiring is ideal, plug-in pendants are an effective temporary or low-cost option that still creates a cozy ambiance.

When used together with existing lights, a pendant above a table can illuminate faces softly and foster intimacy during group sessions.

Wireless Lighting
Picture lights above artwork add sophistication and can be cordless. Rechargeable wireless picture lights that operate by remote are a neat solution—no hardwiring required, and they make the art pop while adding soft, targeted illumination.

Office Art
Make a Memo Board to Look Like Art
A magnetic memo board disguised as framed art blends form and function. Mount a metal sheet, cover it with a mural or poster, and finish with molding to create a framed look. Use magnet clips to display notes and announcements, or add plexiglass to write on with dry-erase markers.

This project is an inexpensive way to keep communication visible without sacrificing style.

Hang a Gallery Wall
Curating a gallery wall is an affordable way to personalize a room. Vintage art downloads and inexpensive prints allow you to mix media—sketches, watercolors, and oil-style prints—for a curated look. Stick to a related color palette for cohesion, or choose vibrant, eclectic pieces for a modern feel.
For this gallery, we used four 18″ x 24″ frames and one 16″ x 20″ frame, selecting vintage-style prints that complemented the room’s color story.
- Mountain painting
- Branch sketch
- Lake painting
- Vase painting
- Meadow sketch

Use Mirrors in Windowless Areas
Large mirrors are invaluable in windowless rooms. They reflect light into dark corners and create the illusion of more space. A full-length, windowpane-style mirror was an ideal solution for the windowless side of this room.

Set Up a Seating Area
A comfortable seating nook invites people to step away from the table and relax—perfect for reading, taking a break, or informal conversation. We repurposed an existing bookshelf and added baskets for hidden storage, then created a cozy corner with a leather armchair and a tasseled ottoman for resting feet.

The ottoman’s fringe detail adds a homey touch, and the chair provides a comfortable spot for guests or clients.

Be Smart About Storage Space
Because the room doubles as Amber’s office, we added a fold-up secretary desk that offers generous storage but tucks away during meetings to keep traffic flowing. A Bluetooth speaker and a diffuser were included to engage senses—sound and scent make a room feel lived-in and calming.

Amber requested to keep her green desk chair, and it fit the scheme beautifully—serendipitous and practical.

Add Texture With Textiles
Curtains, rugs, and soft textiles add depth, absorb sound, and make a room feel intentional. Hanging curtains “high and wide” around an off-center window made the opening feel larger and balanced. We selected a rug with terracotta, moss green, and teal tones to anchor the layout and inspire the rest of the decor choices.
Starting with a rug or defining piece helps guide the color palette and ensures cohesive choices for paint, furnishings, and accessories.
