Hand-Painted Raw Silk Accent Chair for Master Bedroom

Every time I pick up a piece of furniture from a thrift store, flea market, or yard sale, I wonder about the life it’s already lived. We always say, “if walls could talk,” but furniture has stories to tell too.

A few months ago I rescued a Duncan Phyfe dining chair at a yard sale for almost nothing. The moment I saw it I pictured dozens of family gatherings and holiday dinners it might have witnessed. It was worn and marked, but full of character—perfect for a new chapter.

I can imagine the chair’s beginning: someone, perhaps a newlywed couple, excitedly choosing this set at a downtown furniture shop. Decades later it sat in my driveway waiting for a makeover. It had scuffs, scratches, and an aged patina, but that only made it more appealing.

We needed a small chair for the corner of our master bedroom—somewhere to place clothes in the evening instead of leaving them on the floor—so this was the perfect candidate for a Trash to Treasure transformation.

Supplies used:

  • Fusion Mineral Paint in Raw Silk
  • 1.5″ angled paintbrush
  • Spray shellac (1 can)
  • Medium-grit sandpaper
  • Manual staple gun
  • Magnolia Home Boulder upholstery fabric in navy

Because our bedroom already features a lot of blue, I chose a classic soft white for the chair—Raw Silk from Fusion Mineral Paint’s new color collection. I appreciate paints that don’t require heavy prep or sealing; they save time and simplify the process.

After the first coat, a reddish-brown stain in the wood started to bleed through, giving the white paint a pinkish tint. That’s a common issue with old stained pieces. The quick fix was to spray the affected areas with shellac; once the shellac dried I applied another coat of paint and the bleed-through was gone.

Once painted, I sanded the edges lightly with medium-grit sandpaper to distress and reveal a bit of the chair’s original character. Raw Silk has a subtle creamy-gray undertone that complements both warm and cool tones, making it versatile in a variety of rooms.

For the seat I reupholstered with Magnolia Home’s Boulder fabric in navy. I wrapped the seat like a present and stapled the fabric to the underside—simple, clean, and durable. The finished look blends French-inspired lines with modern American farmhouse styling.

The chair now tucks neatly beside the dresser and does exactly what we needed: it gives a home to clothes in the evening instead of letting them pile up on the floor. Little functional touches like this make daily routines feel a bit more organized.

I left a few seasonal accents nearby—metallics and greenery that I’m still calling winter decor—and the chair blends right in with the room’s palette. It’s a small makeover, but sometimes a little piece can change the feel of a space.

I’m always inspired by the creativity of other thrift-store transformations. A few friends and fellow makers share their before-and-after projects as part of our Trash to Treasure series, and they never fail to amaze with their ingenuity and resourcefulness.

A quick note of thanks to Fusion Mineral Paint for providing paint to help with this makeover. Their colors and products made it easy to breathe new life into an old chair.

If you have a thrifted or yard-sale piece waiting for a refresh, consider what a fresh coat of paint, a shellac blocker, and a new seat cover could do. A small investment of time can transform something forgotten into a favorite again.
