How to create a faux wallpaper ceiling with vinyl decals: a DIY block-print method that adds drama and personality to any room.
One thing is certain about our daughter’s preteen bedroom makeover: it’s anything but dull. Vintage Swedish wallpaper, a woven chandelier, Smoky Blue paint, and now a playful bird ceiling combine to make a whimsical, unique space. Best of all, I achieved the look of a wallpapered ceiling for just $67 using an easy vinyl decal technique.

The Best Room to Try a Wallpapered Ceiling
Wallpapering a ceiling is a bold way to elevate a room and bring pattern and color to the “fifth wall.” Because you spend so much time lying in bed and looking up, a bedroom is an ideal place to introduce big personality overhead. In our daughter’s room, instead of counting sheep she’ll count birds, which suits her more-is-more style.
This faux wallpaper ceiling project uses peel-and-stick vinyl decals arranged in a block-print pattern. It’s a flexible method that can add drama in an already maximalist room or act as a tasteful accent in a more minimal space. You can adapt the technique to any decal shape—birds, stars, butterflies, or simple motifs—so the approach works for many decorating styles.

Why Choose Peel-and-Stick Faux Wallpaper for a Ceiling?
Cost
High-end rolls of patterned wallpaper can be expensive—enough to make you rethink the project. By contrast, vinyl decal sheets let you reproduce a patterned ceiling look for a fraction of the cost. For our 13′ x 13′ ceiling, the bird decals came to about $67 total, compared with several hundred dollars for traditional wallpaper rolls.
Labor
Installing pasted wallpaper or a large peel-and-stick mural on a ceiling is physically demanding and requires skill. Working overhead is tiring and can make alignment tricky. Using individual vinyl decals reduces the need for complex adhesive seams and makes correcting placement easier, saving both time and stress.

Temporariness
Peel-and-stick decals are removable, so you can change the look later without the hassle and mess of removing pasted wallpaper. This makes decals a great choice for renters, temporary rooms, or anyone who likes to switch designs periodically.
Works on Textured Ceilings
Our bedroom ceiling has a light popcorn texture. The vinyl decals adhered well to that surface without any noticeable lifting. While very heavy texture could affect adhesion, light ceiling texture is usually compatible with high-quality vinyl stickers.
How to Add a Faux Wallpaper Ceiling Using Vinyl Sticker Decals
The finished bird ceiling feels whimsical and elegant—an easy way to mimic the look of a patterned wallpaper without the expense or commitment. The process is straightforward, though it requires patience and careful measuring.
Supplies
- Bird vinyl sticker decals (I used three packs; stars, butterflies, or any repeating shape will work)
- Ladder
- Scissors
- Two tape measures
- Laser level or laser measuring tool
- Marker
- Calculator (handy for double-checking spacing and counts)

Step 1 – Decide Your Measurements
Measure the room and decide how far apart you want your decals to be so the pattern finishes evenly at the edges. For this 13′ x 13′ bedroom I chose a 12″ spacing between birds, staggered on alternating rows to create a block-print effect.

Step 2 – Mark the Ceiling Placement
1. Run one tape measure parallel to a wall and mark the first line at your chosen distance (12″ in my case).
2. Place a second tape measure perpendicular to the first where you want the first decal to sit.
3. Place the laser tool on the floor where the two tape measures meet and point it up to the ceiling.
4. Mark the laser dot on the ceiling with a fine marker. Repeat across the ceiling to lay out a grid of reference points.

Step 3 – Measure and Mark 1–2 Rows
1. Move the perpendicular tape measure along the parallel measure to the next spacing—24″ for my pattern—and mark another dot with the laser.
2. Mark dots every 24″ along the line, then slide the parallel tape over 12″ to create the staggered second row and repeat. This alternation creates the block-print grid.
First row marks: 12″, 36″, 60″, 84″, 108″, 132″, 156″
Second row marks: 24″, 48″, 72″, 96″, 120″, 144″
Continue alternating these sequences until the entire ceiling is mapped.

Step 4 – Place Vinyl Sticker Decals on Ceiling Marks
Cut each decal from its sheet with scissors and press it onto the ceiling at each marked location. Rotate and mix the decal orientations and shapes so adjacent decals don’t look identical—this gives the ceiling a natural, artisanal feel similar to block-printed wallpaper.
Work methodically across the ceiling, measuring, marking, and applying decals until the pattern is complete.
The Finished Bird Wallpaper Ceiling
The project wasn’t difficult, just repetitive: moving tape measures, validating spacing, and climbing up and down a ladder. It took patience, but the result is a whimsical ceiling that feels intentional and heartfelt.

I love how the ceiling turned out. The bird motif also carries sentimental meaning for our family: Olivia’s grandfather is an artist who carves and hand-paints birds, birds featured in our wedding theme, and her nursery years ago used bird decor. Placing birds overhead now felt like a full-circle moment.
