As we check more room makeovers off our home to-do list, it’s becoming clear we’re closer than ever to finishing them all. After completing the kitchen overhaul recently, I assumed the remaining rooms would be an easy downhill ride. But this playroom stopped me in my tracks.
For days I sat in the room trying to sort out the plan while my daughter turned me into a princess and brewed imaginary tea. I love that she can make a mess and play freely here, but I also want the space to be functional for the whole family.
UPDATE: See the full playroom makeover reveal here!
This room has always been mostly my daughter’s playroom, but my goal is to transform it into a flexible combo space: playroom, media room, and craft/homework area. I want a casual, family-friendly room with ample storage for toys, a place to spread out on craft or homework projects, and a comfy spot to collapse on the couch for game night or another showing of Frozen.
Design plan so far:
- Built-ins: When we moved in, I always pictured built-ins on this wall. Seeing a wood accent wall gave me the push I needed. We found weathered fence boards that will add texture behind the TV and around IKEA bookcases. The plan is to anchor the bookcases to the wall, add top molding to make them feel built-in, and possibly add a bench seat with a lift-up top for extra toy and game storage.

Built-ins will provide a tidy, cohesive backdrop for media gear while creating functional storage that looks intentional rather than cluttered.

- Windows: We plan to frame the windows with DIY molding to give them a crisp, finished look. I’m considering textured curtain panels in navy or another muted color to bring in warmth without overwhelming the space.

- Artwork: I want a framed corkboard grid on the back wall so my daughter’s creations can be displayed and swapped out easily. It will be a changing gallery that celebrates her artwork while keeping the walls tidy.
4. Sofa: Our current sofa has plenty of life left, and I’m planning to slipcover it in white cotton that can be washed. A washable slipcover makes sense in a mixed-use family space where kids and spills are inevitable.
5. Coffee table: I’d like a multifunctional coffee table with storage — something that can hold Legos and toys safely inside and also act as a play surface. A soft-close trunk-style table with a removable or attachable play surface would be ideal for building and play.

- 6. Rug: I’m trying to introduce more color than usual and found a rug that feels colorful and playful yet subtle enough for a shared family space. A patterned rug will help define the seating area and hide wear from play.

- 7. Pillows: Throw pillows will coordinate with the rug and add comfort and visual interest. These will likely evolve over time, but a few accent pillows will soften the seating area and tie the color palette together.
- 8. Homework/Craft Station: A long, narrow table along the half wall will serve as a homework and craft station. Paired with sturdy wood-and-metal chairs, it will be a place for crafts now and school projects later, giving us a dedicated surface separate from the couch and floor.

- 9. Ceiling Fan / Lighting: We plan to replace the basic light fixture with a weathered-gray ceiling fan to add style and improve airflow. Layered lighting will help this multi-purpose room function well for play, crafting, and movie nights.
As for wall color, I’m torn between a warm light gray and a clean white shiplap look. Because the room will keep carpet, full shiplap might feel odd, so the final decision will balance warmth, light, and practicality.
These ideas are still evolving as I let the plan marinate, but the core goals are set: create built-in storage, define zones for play and crafts, add comfortable seating, and introduce a playful yet refined palette that works for family life.
Do you have a playroom that needs a refresh? What storage solutions or layout tips have worked in your home to tame toy chaos and create a family-friendly media and craft space? I’d love to hear ideas and suggestions.
