How to Turn a Basic Glass Cabinet Nightstand into a Designer-Worthy Cane Piece for Modern or Traditional Bedrooms
It had been far too long since I tackled a designer knock-off project, so when I started planning a master bedroom refresh I kept picturing a pair of gorgeous cane-style nightstands. The only problem: the real pieces were priced at about $1,100 each. Instead of paying that, I decided to transform an inexpensive glass-cabinet nightstand into a custom-looking cane nightstand with a modern-traditional vibe.
Below I’ll walk you through the supplies, the step-by-step process, and a few tips that made this furniture makeover easy, affordable, and surprisingly impactful in our master bedroom.

I’m sharing this project for Trash to Treasure Transformation Tuesday because it’s one of those simple, high-impact furniture makeovers that costs very little but looks like a custom designer piece once finished.
The original cabinets were perfectly functional; I just wanted to hide the visible clutter inside the glass doors and give the pieces a warmer, more textured look that coordinates with the rest of the room.
Supplies

- Ultra-grip primer or adhesion promoter suitable for laminate furniture
- High-quality white furniture paint (I used a smooth, self-leveling furniture paint)
- Cane webbing cut to the size of the door panels
- Pencil and scissors for tracing and trimming the cane
- Manual staple gun to attach the webbing to the door frame
- Wood stain in a neutral driftwood or gray-brown tone for weathering the cane
- Paintbrush for the stain and for painting touch-ups
- Matte metallic spray paint (matte brass or modern gold finish) for knobs, pulls, and hinges
Step-by-Step Process
1. Remove the glass panels from the cabinet doors and set them aside. This makes the doors easier to paint and gives you a template for the cane webbing.
2. Apply one coat of an adhesion-promoting primer made for laminate surfaces to both nightstands and allow it to dry fully. This step ensures the paint bonds well and lasts.
3. Paint two even coats of the white furniture paint, allowing adequate drying time between coats. I chose a smooth, self-leveling paint to avoid visible brush strokes and to achieve a clean, professional finish.
4. Use the glass panel as a template: trace the outline onto the cane webbing and carefully cut it to size. Fit the cane into the door opening to confirm sizing before attaching.
5. Position the cane webbing on the inside of the door opening (where the glass was) and staple it securely along the back framework. Trim any excess and ensure the weave sits flat and even.
6. To give the cane a slightly aged, balanced look that coordinates with other furniture, apply two light coats of a driftwood-toned wood stain. This adds color depth without overpowering the natural cane texture.
7. Spray the knobs, pulls, and hinges with a matte metallic paint to introduce a modern brass touch. Once the hardware is dry, reattach doors, drawers, and hardware, then move the nightstands back into place.
And that’s it — a simple transformation that delivers a high-end look. The project was quick, budget-friendly, and I estimate we saved roughly $2,100 compared to buying the designer pair. The finished pieces blend perfectly with both modern and traditional elements in the bedroom.
