DIY Gold Leaf Sculpture: Designer Dupe for Less

How to Make a Knock-Off Gold Leaf Sculpture Using Faux Leaves, Spray Paint, Scrap Wood, and Marble Contact Paper

I’ll be honest: at first I didn’t think this tiny DIY would work. I don’t consider myself an artist—my drawing skills are basically stick figures—so I expected this to look homemade. But after spotting elegant gold leaf sculptures at a store and thinking I could recreate them with items I already had, I gave it a try. The result surprised me: these simple pieces look upscale sitting on a shelf, and they cost about $65 less than the store-bought versions.

This project is a quick, budget-friendly way to get a designer-look accent for dressers, buffets, or tabletops. It took me roughly 45 minutes from start to finish, and the steps are easy enough for beginners.

Materials

  • Faux leaves or stems (use any faux foliage you already own or pick a style you like)
  • Metallic gold spray paint (example: Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold)
  • Scrap wood blocks, roughly 3″ x 3″ or any size you prefer
  • Marble contact paper to wrap the wood base
  • Scissors or a craft knife for trimming contact paper
  • Drill and appropriately sized drill bit (to match the stem thickness)
  • Super glue or a strong craft adhesive

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare and paint the leaves: Spray both sides of your faux leaves with metallic gold spray paint, holding the can at the recommended distance. Work in a well-ventilated area and follow the paint manufacturer’s safety instructions. Allow the paint to dry fully before handling.

2. Wrap the wood blocks: While the leaves dry, wrap your scrap wood blocks with marble contact paper the same way you would wrap a small gift box. Smooth the paper carefully to avoid wrinkles and use scissors or a craft knife to trim excess at the corners so seams lie flat.

3. Drill the hole for the stem: Choose a drill bit that fits the stem thickness of your painted leaves and drill a hole centered on the top of each wrapped block. Drill just deep enough to hold the stem securely without going through the block.

4. Secure the stem in place: Add a drop or two of super glue inside the drilled hole, then insert the stem of the painted leaf and hold it until the glue sets. Wipe any excess glue immediately to keep the finish clean.

That’s it—simple, fast, and surprisingly elegant. These little sculptures make great accents, and because they’re lightweight, you can move them around to change the look of a room quickly.

Tips, Variations, and Safety

  • Safety first: Spray paint in a ventilated area and consider a mask and gloves. Follow the instructions on the paint can for best results and drying time.
  • Choose foliage styles to suit your decor: Tall stems create a dramatic silhouette, while shorter leaves give a subtler accent.
  • Base size and finish: You can vary the size and shape of the wood base and try different contact paper patterns—marble, stone, or even solid colors work well.
  • Attachment alternatives: If you prefer not to drill, you can use a strong epoxy to glue the stem directly to the wrapped base, but drilling gives a cleaner, more secure look.
  • Protect the finish: If the spray paint feels delicate, consider a clear sealer to prevent rubbing or chipping.
