Our Attic Clean-Out Makeover: How We Store Seasonal Decor + Free Printable Bin Labels for Christmas, Spring, Summer, and Fall
We’re a mixed bag around here. One minute we’re sharing a pretty room reveal, and the next we’re elbow-deep in sixty-year-old dust, digging through the attic and wondering why we ever thought this was a good idea.
It always seems worse before it gets better — that mantra helps when the chaos of a home project is in full swing. We’ve been steadily working through our big home goals for the year, focusing on decluttering and getting organized. This attic project isn’t glamorous, but finishing it felt incredibly satisfying.
Here’s the attic — the space we’d only set foot in once in nearly three years living in this house.

It was dusty, ugly, and filled with piles of mysterious items that had likely accumulated over decades. Old houses are full of stories, and this attic had plenty to tell.
We pulled out an old stroller, rolls of carpet, boxes of books, outdated clothing, window screens, leftover Christmas decorations from previous owners, and yes — floppy disks. There was blown insulation across the plywood floor, so we removed it with a shop vac and replaced it with new fiberglass rolls beneath the attic floor to create usable space for seasonal storage.

During the clean-out we discovered an exposed live electrical wire. Thankfully we spotted it before it caused any trouble — a good reminder to be cautious and take safety seriously in older homes.
After clearing and cleaning, the space went from cluttered and hazardous to clean and functional. It’s still an old attic, but now it’s a practical, organized storage area.

How to Organize Seasonal Decor Storage
We follow a few simple rules for seasonal decor so things stay manageable and easy to find every year. Here’s what worked for us:
- Purge regularly. At the end of each season we audit our decor. If an item hasn’t been used in the last two Christmases — or during the past year for other seasons — we donate, sell, or recycle it. Less clutter makes storage and decorating simpler.
- Group like items together. We organize boxes by category rather than by room or theme. That lets us mix and match decorations year after year without digging through a dozen boxes.
Christmas storage categories:
- Trees
- Wreaths
- Garlands and floral stems
- Lights and battery-powered decor
- Figurines and collectibles
- Ornaments
- Ribbons, gift boxes, bags, and wrapping supplies
Other seasonal categories:
- Spring florals and planters
- Summer florals and lightweight accents
- Fall florals, pumpkins, and harvest decor
We subscribe to a capsule-decor mindset: choose neutral pieces and accents that can work in multiple seasons. That approach reduces the amount of truly seasonal decor you need and gives you more flexibility with what you already own. Less storage space required, and it saves money.

We use heavy-duty storage boxes with wheels for bulky items and medium plastic bins for smaller pieces. The wheeled containers make moving heavy boxes in and out of the attic much easier, and stackable bins keep things neat and stable.
Labels are essential. We print simple bin labels and tape them to the boxes with clear shipping tape — that acts like a basic laminate and protects the paper without extra supplies. On each label we list the main contents so anyone can quickly know what’s inside without opening every box.

If you subscribe to our newsletter, you’ll receive a free downloadable set of printable seasonal bin labels. The set includes labels for Christmas, spring, summer, and fall to help you get started.
After organizing, the attic looks far better. It’s not finished living space, but it’s clean, safe, and useful — and that’s a huge win for us.

I can’t help imagining how nice it would be to finish the space with drywall and skylights and turn it into a cozy hideout, but with ducts, wiring, and insulation in place, it’s probably never going to happen. A girl can dream though.
Do you have a system for seasonal storage? Have you tackled an attic overhaul? We’d love to hear what’s worked for you.
