Modern + Traditional + Farmhouse: Summer Living Room Ideas for a Light, Airy, Budget-Friendly Space
One small change often sparks another. A new rug in our living room set me off on a little seasonal refresh—nothing full-scale, just a few swaps that made the whole space feel fresher and more relaxed for summer.

I didn’t redo everything. I brought back our summer botanical print set, rotated pillows from other rooms using my small decor capsule approach, and ordered new slipcovers for the sofa and chairs (I’ll share those soon). Still, these modest changes made the room feel new—lighter and more seasonal without breaking the bank.
I mentioned on Instagram Stories that we planned to replace the old rug we brought from our last house. Between puppy training and everyday wear, it didn’t feel right for a crawling baby, so we found a replacement that’s both pretty and practical.

The new rug looks far more expensive than it was. It lies flat, feels comfortable, and immediately warmed up the room’s layered neutral palette with soft blue-gray tones—perfect for a summer living room that aims to feel cool and calm.

When summer hits in South Carolina, I crave light, airy decor—lots of white, soft gray, and gentle blues. While interior colors can’t change the humidity, they do help create a tranquil, spa-like vibe indoors, even if the ceiling fan is always on full blast.
Our limewashed brick fireplace continues to be one of my favorite features. It anchors the room with texture and an aged character that pairs well with modern and farmhouse pieces.

That basket on the hearth hides a small army of chew toys for the dogs—an easy, practical trick to keep the room tidy. And, full disclosure: the two little green plants on the mantel are faux. With a busy household, I choose to keep real plants to a minimum so I can focus on keeping the family thriving.

We also built a window seat from a repurposed kitchen cabinet last summer. It’s been a fantastic, space-saving solution for hiding TV components and cables while providing extra seating and storage.

The peaceful shots you see don’t show the whole story—right next to the living room is Olivia’s playroom, now full of toys while school is out. Real family life lives between the styled photos and everyday moments.

Our ottoman has a secret past: it started as a thrifted coffee table and became a hand-tufted bench. It was a lot of work, but the final piece fits beautifully with the new rug and adds unique character to the room.

Near the back door, the entry area has stayed largely the same all year—except for the seasonal botanical prints I swap out. A simple Craigslist bench gathers pool towels and flip-flops and keeps things casual and useful.

Our breakfast nook is where we eat most meals. I repurposed two antique banister pieces into a wall planter for seasonal greenery (I use faux plants in some spots to keep upkeep low). It’s an affordable way to add color and interest that can change with the seasons.

One indulgence I won’t skimp on is fresh flowers. A simple vase of blooms lifts the room instantly. To help stems last a bit longer, I dipped their ends in alum—simple tricks for extending a bouquet’s life.
