Step-by-step cleaning process to revive an outdoor patio table and make a glass table top look like new.
I nearly met my match tackling this project. True story.
By “nearly” I mean I’m stubborn and determined — when I decide to finish something, I finish it. Sometimes that means wrestling heavy furniture solo, even when help would have been smarter.
I’ve been known to hoist a 100-pound table and pretend I’m stronger than I am. My arms would argue otherwise.
The truth is, this rusted and neglected glass patio table had been on the property long before we moved in. The previous owners left it behind, and it looked hopeless at first glance.
My partner Robert and I almost hauled it off to the dump, but I thought it might be worth one more try. With a little effort this forgotten table could be useful again — and a fraction of the cost of a new set.
How to Restore a Glass Patio Table
This little table needed a lot of elbow grease, but the top is glass — not solid gray as it first appeared. Glass furniture, whether indoors or outdoors, tends to collect mildew, grime, and water spots over time. The good news: with the right cleaning and a fresh coat of paint on the frame, you can make a tired table look brand new again.
We wanted a functional outdoor dining table for summer nights by the pool, and because patio tables of this style can cost a couple hundred dollars, restoring ours felt worthwhile. I could hardly believe it was the same table once I finished.
Supplies
- Large bowl of hot water
- 1 Tbsp liquid dish soap (a gentle dish soap works best)
- Soft scrub sponge (non-abrasive)
- Rubber gloves
- Garden hose
- Screwdriver (for removing legs and brackets)
- Drop cloth or canvas to protect the work area
- Spray primer (2 cans recommended for full coverage)
- Spray paint in your preferred color and finish (we used white semi-gloss; 2 cans recommended)
- Paper towels or soft lint-free cloths
Step 1 – Scrub the Glass Surface
Start by mixing a tablespoon of liquid dish soap into a large bowl of hot water. Use a soft scrub sponge dipped in the solution to clean both the top and underside of the glass in gentle circular motions. Don’t press too hard — tempered glass is sturdy but abrasive cleaners can dull or scratch the surface.
Surprisingly, dish soap and hot water removed more grime and mildew than store-bought glass cleaners did. After scrubbing, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose.
If you still see a hazy film or water spots, spray plain white vinegar diluted with water onto the surface and wipe with a clean microfiber cloth or even old newspaper to improve clarity.
Within a few minutes the glass should look refreshed. You might even discover a pattern or texture you hadn’t noticed before once the haze is removed.
Step 2 – Disassemble the Table for Painting
For the best paint job on the metal frame, remove the glass top and disassemble the base. This is the step that nearly got me into trouble — the tabletop can be heavy and awkward. Enlist a strong friend or wait for a partner to help you. Lifting the glass alone risks injury and accidental breakage.
To remove the top, flip the table gently and use a screwdriver to unscrew the legs and brackets holding the glass. Carefully lift the tempered glass off and set it in a safe place while you work on the frame.
Step 3 – Clean the Table Base
Lay the metal frame pieces on a drop cloth and scrub them with the same hot water and dish soap solution. Remove rust flakes, dirt, and old debris. Rinse and allow the pieces to dry completely before priming and painting.
Step 4 – Prime and Paint the Base
Once the metal is dry, apply a light, even coat of spray primer formulated for metal. Let the primer dry fully according to the can’s instructions, then apply one or two light coats of spray paint in your chosen color. Hold the can about 8–12 inches away and use steady, sweeping motions to avoid drips and achieve smooth coverage. Allow the paint to cure thoroughly before reassembly.
Step 5 – Reattach the Glass Top
Carefully slide the tempered glass back into the newly painted metal surround and reattach the legs and brackets with a screwdriver. Flip the table upright and inspect for any loose hardware. Once everything is secure, your table should look refreshed and much more inviting.

To finish the look, we paired the table with a striped black-and-white umbrella and simple white and wood-look patio chairs. The result feels fresh and inviting — far cheaper than buying a whole new set, and perfect for outdoor dinners and gatherings.
It’s amazing what a good cleaning and a couple of cans of paint can do to transform an old piece of furniture.
We’ve already put our refinished table to use for family gatherings and nightly dinners outside. It feels like a brand-new addition to the patio and has definitely earned its place here.
