Seasonal Simplicity: A Neutral Christmas Living Room Tour and a Gentle Reminder to Choose Grace
I could open this post with a polished greeting — “Welcome to our home, where the greenery is perfectly placed, every cushion is fluffed, and not a speck of dust remains.” If you only looked at the photos, you might believe that’s exactly how things are.
But what kind of friend would I be if I let you walk away thinking life looks like a staged photo every day?

This season I’m joining my wonderful friends Krista and April and a talented group of bloggers to share our homes dressed up for Christmas. Scrolling through these beautiful tours on blogs and social feeds is inspiring, but it often brings that quiet voice that says, “You’re not doing enough.”
That inner critic can be harsher than Scrooge. Don’t believe it. You are doing more than enough.

This Christmas, I hope you will choose grace. Not necessarily “graceful” — I’m the first to fumble a gift or trip over a tree skirt — but choose kindness and gentleness, for others and for yourself.
When the dishes pile up and the laundry overflows, choose grace. When baking with the kids becomes a frosting war, choose grace. When someone cuts you off in holiday traffic, choose grace. When a cashier seems short with you at the checkout, choose grace.

When someone lashes out on social media or your partner comes home worn down from a difficult day at work, choose grace. It matters more than how neatly the tree is trimmed or how many gifts are under it.

Christmas is joyful and magical, but each year I remind myself that the way I love others — through patience, small kindnesses, and forgiveness — matters much more than gift lists, decorations, or perfectly planned outings.
That person who cut you off on the road might be carrying grief. The harried cashier could be worrying about bills and how to make the season special for their children. The harsh comment online might spring from a private struggle.

Maybe the Grinch was onto something: Christmas doesn’t only come from a store. It shows up in the small, quiet ways we give of ourselves — our time, our patience, our tenderness.

It may seem odd to share photos of a decorated living room alongside this kind of message, but this is real — a small piece of my heart and a reminder I need every year.

Above all, choose grace for yourself. A tree crowded with popsicle-stick ornaments and pipe-cleaner candy canes made by little hands is far more beautiful than any spread in a magazine. Those lumpy gingerbread men with too much icing are perfect. The people in your home matter far more than the number of lights on the roof.

Real beauty is all around if you choose to look for it. Sometimes the Grinch of the day, the Scrooge of the week, or the stressed-out shopper at the mall will remind us what the season is truly about — because we’re human and we grow through those moments.

Even Scrooge finally understood: “I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year.” That hope — of carrying kindness, patience, forgiveness, and love beyond the holidays — is what I wish for you.
Merry Christmas, dear friends. May your holiday be wonderfully imperfect, filled with grace, warmth, and the people you love.
