2019 Holiday Housewalk: Festive Home Tour Highlights

A cozy holiday home tour that blends traditional charm with modern touches, full of sentimental details and Christmas decor ideas to fit any budget.

Merry Christmas, friends!

It feels wonderful to say that out loud. I may have been whispering it unofficially for weeks, but now it’s official—and I’m so happy to share our home with you for the season.

I’m honored to participate in Jen Rizzo’s Holiday Housewalk Tour again this year. I’m stop #3 on the tour, so if you’re following the full housewalk, welcome in—and if you arrived here from Shannon’s beautiful home at Fox Hollow Cottage, hello and thanks for stopping by!

Foyer

Quick note: please don’t peek into the closets—they’re hiding last-minute wrapping and other odds and ends. But truly, welcome.

If you’re new here, my husband Robert and I live in the suburbs of Charlotte, NC, with our two daughters: Olivia (7) and Regan (1), and Lola, our Yorkie/Schnauzer who thinks she’s the baby of the family.

This is our third Christmas in this house, but I surround it with pieces that carry a much longer story. This year I brought out treasured Swedish heirlooms from my grandmother—her crystal bowl and a vintage tapered candleholder—that make the foyer feel especially meaningful.

I love black-and-white family photos and tuck them everywhere I can. Our family images hang along the staircase in the center of our home, and on the foyer chest I framed a page of “O Holy Night” from an old sheet music book. My grandfather sang it as a solo at his final Christmas service, so it always brings him close to my heart.

Dining Room

Most of the year this room is a catch-all—crafts, projects, and general life clutter on our semi-DIY dining table—so I love that during the holidays it gets to shine the way it was meant to.

For us, the dining room becomes the gathering place. If I can decorate, host, and let everyone else bring the food while I set the table, I’m perfectly content.

This season I kept the tree simple—partly because we have a curious 13-month-old, and partly because I like a restrained look. A few bell ornaments were left within reach for a short time so she could explore, and then the rest of the décor stayed intact.

Here’s an easy centerpiece trick: one strand of garland, a few pomegranates from the grocery store, a yard or two of red velvet ribbon, and some taper candles. It’s fast, affordable, and classic.

I also added a little garland to our new chandelier—simple touches like that make a big visual impact. Overall I kept the tableware we’ve used since our wedding and adopted a “less is more” approach this year.

Kitchen

Full disclosure: there may be dishes in the sink. We live here, and life happens. I love a tidy kitchen, but I love the mess that comes with baking, cooking, and making memories even more.

I framed handwritten recipes from my mother, grandmothers, and great-grandmother and hung them in the kitchen—seeing their handwriting every day is such a warm reminder of family traditions.

Breakfast Nook

We call this the “breakfast nook,” though it really hosts every meal. For the holidays it transforms into a cozy, candlelit corner—perfect for wearing footie pajamas while enjoying breakfast by candlelight.

This little space gets very little natural light, so I welcome the soft glow of candles and lanterns that make it feel intimate and special.

Living Room

This is where the real holiday magic happens. We have family game nights here, curl up by the fire for Home Alone (again), gather around the tree with our girls, read “The Christmas Story,” and celebrate the reason for the season.

As time goes on, I find myself more excited about giving than receiving. The best gifts are time together, laughter, and the small moments that become family stories.

It doesn’t matter what’s in the stockings or what’s under the tree. We already have so much to celebrate and to be grateful for.

Seeing Christmas through my daughters’ eyes brings all of this into sharper focus. The messes, the giggles, the small traditions—those are the things that make the season beautiful.

“May our hearts prepare Him room, our lives reflect His presence, our homes radiate His peace.”

The next stop on the tour is Bre’s lovely home at Rooms for Rent—go say hello and enjoy the rest of the Holiday Housewalk. If you missed the beginning of the tour, you can start from the tour kickoff post and follow along with the hashtag #JRHolidayHousewalk on social media.

Wishing you a merry and bright week, y’all.
